another thing...when my baby is conversating with me...he always talks in the male pronoun...like If I ask him "hows your mom" he will say "him good"./....at first I dont he was makin fun of me ..then I noticed he would always say it...so I caught on to that lil piece....but when we correspond thru internet...he will hit me up with....YA...YO..............(which I think he is so cute sayin things like that because it seems of (words) excitement....so I guess I wanna know.....is it a greeting of some sorts.....
and I do noticed him always when askin about my son....or any male person he will say "how is master Jayson?" always master...master....why master? is this also something to do with respect ??? or just a heading...etc.....because the wimmin dont get that?....hmmm..... I am RASS outta my mind!!!!....lol....hurry with more learnin////and yes you need the your langauge translated right along side the others...spanish...what not? but can I ask a question.....does jamaican border on spanish at all....????? |

Oh my gosh, Stella is cracking Kellher up!!!! O.k I am here to help Estorm because when I first moved to Jamaica I couldn't understand it either but it is very easy to learn. I came in grade 6 and I didn't reach the middle of the year before I was fluent. Ok, so here goes.........
claffy-an idot depending on the way someone says it it can be playfull or harsh. cyaan-can't deh-can have variuos meanings eg. uno deh?-are you and that person boyfriend and girlfriend? dem deh?-are they bf and gf? weh dem deh?-where are they? see dem deh-there they are. who deh call me?-who is calling me? move deh one minute-move for a minute etc almighty-an expression like Oh God!! gweh-go away 'top di noise-stop the noise/be quiet lick-hit eg tek lick..yu damn dog mi a go ding yu likkle more/check yu likkle more/look fi yu likkle more-I will be comming to see you later. patu/patuk-owl a popular phrase is: yu ugly like patu!! obeah-voodoo/witchcraft. wha mek?-why? a wah?-what? a lie-it's a lie, when you don't believe something. a untrut'- same as above come ya-come here hey gyal lef from bou' ya- hey girl go away-but the phrase itself is much harder than the translation looks. I will hit you up with more next time but 4 now does anyone remember this at school?- Eternal Father bless our hand, guide us with thy frying pan. Keep us free from evil flour it will make our dumplin' sour...........taken from the national song. Until next time hollaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!! |

Ok Estorm I see you have read it now. I look back before and you say he reffers to everyone as him. Well that is true of all Jamaicans, they all talk like that, even me. Once going to Rusea's we had to stop all of that when talking to the teachers cause they'd have a fit over it and they'd be like Joesph! (that's my last name) I cannot believe you come from England and talking like that! Well, here are some phrases:
coolie-refers to a person mixed with Indian and Black, there hair is not straight but not as curly as black peoples. brownin'-refers to a brown person, usually a girl. jan cro'-john crow, a volture like bird that feeds on dead flesh(like a volture)and is used to cuss somebody eg yu damn jan cro'!!! Rass claat-as someone stated before is used to cuss and a clever song was derived from the swear words: Bombo ***** rass claat which is Bongo push di grass cyaat (cart) Bomboclaat/*****claat/rasscaat/bloodclaat-are bad words At one point everyone seemed hell bent on burning everything eg Bu'n a fire pon a battyman/lesbian etc dung-down, mi a go dung di road. anybody deh up a yard deh?-is anyone at home?(another use of deh) I am going to look 4 your e-mail address and send you a jamaican dictionary thing that my mother sent me. P.S have you ever been to Jamaica? Do you like it? Where did you stay? Holla at me soon. |
