My cousin's boyfriend was born in Jamaica...
...but raised here in the States!
We were out drinking, and a few hours into our partying...I burped and laughed about it. He gave me a disgusted look and said girls in his culture don't do that...then I looked at him and said "Bombaclot!" and everyone started laughing...he of course got MAD! Was I out of line?
My cousin and I are really close, but since that happened her boyfriend never wants to come to group outings, or when I ask about him, she tells me that he's at work, or doesn't feel good.

Re: My cousin's boyfriend was born in Jamaica...
EXACTLY!
I'm Samoan, and he used the term "Ufa" (a bad word usually meaning "F*c^") alot that night, so when he pretty much told me that I was rude for burping (thats how I took it) I said what I said.
In hindsight, when he stopped coming around the family functions...I then started to overanalyze using that term. I'm around alot of Jamaicans, I go to so many reggae functions and Bombaclot is used so loosely. So when the dude stopped coming around, I thought maybe Bombaclot is like the Jamaican "N" word, and non-Jamaicans shouldn't use it or something. LOL.

Re: My cousin's boyfriend was born in Jamaica...
Yeah he knows what it means.
Like if someone tells a joke and it's aimed towards you...you can say "Eh, ufa!" and nothing will come of it.
But if you're mad at someone and just yell "ufa" that takes on a totally different meaning...its more derogatory. So he was using the term moreso in the first more comedic way. I thought I was doing the same thing by using Bombaclot in a joking manner. Some people are more sensitive than others I guess...Im'a let that ish slide and not even worry about it anymore.
I just wanted to know since you all have been to Jamaica, if I was doing a patois Faux Paus!

Re: My cousin's boyfriend was born in Jamaica...
"Bad words" exist in most cultures. What is a bad word for you is not one for me. I can say "Ufa" all day and think nothing off it. I even curse in Arabic sometimes, why, its fun, has no social meaning for me and nobody knows what I'm saying (plus it sounds nice).
For example, if I edited the word B*mb*cl*t you posted above, many people here would find it strange, thats because they are not Jamaicans.
They guy in question might have been brought up around Jamaican middle-class background with a slight English social class ........culture. I dont need to tell you that in a business setting blurting out Jamaican bad words wont be looked upon in good light, unless its a construction site.

Re: My cousin's boyfriend was born in Jamaica...
IMHO what she did in that setting is this
he said "burping out loud is rude in my culture"
she said "F you asshole"
Now although she said it jokingly...he took it as an insult. an apology is necessary.
that will be $250.00 please
