as a non-jamaican, i can't speak patwah. i can understand it when i read it, and i think i may also understand it if i hear it spoken slowly.
i don't think i can hold a conversation in patwah.
i don't feel embarassed because i dont try to speak it. but if i did, i think i would be embarassed.
i think etj helped me a little in understanding it......i don't know how i don't speak a language but have the accent.....well, only cus i'm always "accused" of being jamaican by sum other american ppl anyways, i think if i had the words and all, it wudn't sound too bad even tho I dont think i speak with a W. indies accent. it's hard to speak any language the "right way" without using the proper accent, getit?

Mi lived there for 17.5 yrs but I can type it and still speak it well.

Sometimes I chip in and out wid de patois and the english (just a likkle cute jamaicanbritsh/american/french) accent but when mi bringle... a bear patois come outta mi head.

Belive me, Mrs G...there were times bakk inna di early 80's wen mi wish mi wuz wan kuntrie bway. At least wen town get hot, mi kudda fine wan kuntri bush fo run to. But no such luck; Mi a bawn kingstonian, Sistah.
