Below is our own version of the many slangs or Jamaican Creole Dialect used in everyday conversations in Jamaican communities.

Di sun hot All di while inna Jamaica. (The sun is hot all the time in Jamaica.)

An / ahn- An or And. (Conjunction)
Yuh an mi (You and me or You and I.)

A NUH MI - Denial or doing something that you are not responsible for. That's not me. I am not one who...
A nuh mi do it! (I am not the one who did it!).

A TRUE- It is true; I am not lying.

Awright (ah-rite)- All right, sure, yes, okay, okay then.

Baan / Bawn - Born. A weh yuh baan? (Where were you born?)

Baby madda- Mother of a child who is not your wife.

Babylon- A Rasta word for the police and the corrupt system or government.

Backside- Refers to someone rump or used to express towards another person as an insult.
Move yuh backside! (Move your self).

Badda (bad-da)- Bother.
Nuh Badda mi. (Don?t bother me.)

Bad like yawz- Expression for saying something is really cool.

Bad man/bwoy- Criminal type guy. A really bad individual.
Bad man no flee. (Gangsters don?t run away.)
Dat a bad bwoy. (That is a gangster.)

Bait- Person who can't be trusted, a scoundrel, punk, scum, and these types of people. Ooman nuh like bait. (Women don?t like punks.)

Bald head- A Rasta label for one who is too caught up with the evil system (Babylon). Also is anyone who is not a dreadlocks or rasta. Usually used to describe government officials.

Bandu- A hair band worn by women.

Bandulu / bandooloo- criminal or crooked activity, scams, fake. Things of such nature.

Bare (beer)- Only.
Is bare pickney yahso. (There?s only children here.)

Bashy- means cool, awesome, nice stuff, ECT.

Bashment / Bashy- dancehall or great party. Also means something or
someone that looks good or is good.
Yuh car look bashy. (Your car looks great.)

Batty- Primarily means butt; also signals to homosexuals.
'Im a batty-bwoy. (He is gay).

BAWL: to cry.

Big up- a gesture of tribute or greetings.

Bills- A basic Jamaican $100 bill.

Blessed - A Rasta word used as a salutation; blessing(s).

Bling - Flashy and expensive; necklace or chain.
Look pon mi bling. (Look at my chain).

Bloodclaat - Strong curse word.

Bloodfire / blud-fiah - Hell, also politically correct word for bloodclaat.

Blouse an skirt - Politcally correct version for bumboclaat.

Bly - Favor or chance.
Mi mus get a bly. (I must get a chance.)

Bobo dread - A certain sect of Rastas that wear turbans and carry brooms to signify cleansiness. They are of the Bobo Shanti Order and are true followers of Prince Emmanuel.

Boddaration - Trouble and misery also a comical version of ?Bother.?

Bokkle - Bottle.

Boots - Condoms; also shoes.

Bout - About.
Nuh worry bout it. (Don?t worry about it).

Bow - to perform oral sex; mostly on a woman.

BowCat - Person who performs oral sex.

Box - To fight and punch.
She box 'im inna `im face. (She punched him in his face.)

Bredda - Brother.

Bredren - Fellow friends and collegues; brothers in unity.

Browning - Complementing a black person of light skin, and good complexion.

Bruk - Broke, broken, break.
Nuh bruk it. (Don?t break it).

Brukout - A climax of pure energy and excitement; to act unruly. Usually at a party. Without the usual restrictions.

Buck up- To accidentally bump into; to meet by chance.

Bud - Bird.

Buddy - Male genital.

Bulla - A sweet cheap semi-hard round cake made from flour, spices and sugar. Nice

Bumboclaat- Strong curse word.

Bun- To get cheated on; also burn, kill, and to smoke.
  • She deh gi `im bun. (She is cheating on him.)
    Mi aguh bun a skliff. (I am going to smoke some weed or ganja)
    Bun dung chi chi man!? (The Rastas say, ?Burn down (kill) homosexuals!?)

Bupps- A male who is sought to provide financially for a woman that he wants relationship from. She bupps `im out. (She played him for money).

Bush weed- A term for rendering poor quality herb or poor lawn grass or wild bushes

Buss- To bust; like to bust a move; become unruly. To rant on someone. To make a big break or become popular.
Sean Paul buss out. (Sean Paul became very popular.)

Bwoy- Boy. This is a common insultive term for anybody male.

Card - To play a joke or trick.
Dem play a card pon mi. (They tricked me).

Cargo - A big and heavy gold or expensive chain one wears to show wealth.

Casco - Imitation, cheap stuff or fake designer clothes.

Cass-cass - Shouting fight with bad words.

Cat - Female genitals. Girl or woman.

Chaka-chaka - Messy and untidy.

Cho - Expression of surprise. Expression made when upset.

Champion - A person who is extraordinary on the dancefloor and in the bed.

Chalice - A Rasta's pipe that is made from a hollowed coconut.

Chatty-Chatty - Overly talkative to the point of irritation.

Chewsday - Tuesday.

Chi chi - Gay, homosexual, queer.
Chi-chi man. (Gay man.)

Chuck - Full-size truck or to push a person in the chest with both hands.

Clean - Sexual expression for giving a blowjob.
Gal cum clean off mi rifle. (Girl come and give me a blowjob.)

**** it up - Aggressive sex.

Coil - Term for alot of money when dollars are wrapped in a roll.

Coppa / Silva - a term for a coin valued less than a dollar.

Coo-yah! / Cuh-yah - Look here!

Coolie - Jamaican with Indian parents. From Indian descent.

Coolie hair - Straight hair.

Craven - Greedy.

Criss - Slang for cool and instyle.
Dat criss. (That is cool.)

Crosses - Problems and misfortunes. Mi always inna crosses. (I always have bad luck.)

Culcha / kul-cha - Reflecting or pertaining to the roots, values and
traditions of Rastas.

Cutchie - A clay-fired earth piece that fits into a chalice needed to hold ganja; a cup.

Cutlass - A cutting instrument; a very large knife. Machete

Cutta - Cutter; can opener; cutting instrument.

Cut-yeye - Cutting your eyes at someone by turning the eyes the other way sharply.

Cyar / key-ar - Car.

Dah-kahs - Sunglasses, shades.

Dat - That



Dawta - Daughter; woman, good woman friend.

Ded - Dead, die, killed, to kill.

Dear - Expensive.
Dat cost dear. (That is very expensive.)

Deesant - Decent.

Deh - There ? as in place. Also asks where something is.

Deh-yah - Here or there.

Dem-

Them. Use dem after plural objects.
Di bwoy dem. (The boys.)

Des - Desperate.
`Im sey im des fi a food.

(He said he?s desperate for food).

Di - The; did, was.
?Im did dun di ting? (Did he complete the thing?)



Dideh - Was there or right over there.
?Im dideh. (He is/was there). Member where wi dideh? (Do you

remember where we were?)

Dis - This.

Disya - This right here.

Don - A term and name

for one who is well respected.

Doon-doos - Referring to an albino.

Downpress - Rasta word for ?

Oppress?.

Dread - Person who has dreadlocks, greeting to friend, expression of a good idea.

Dreadnut

- Rasta word for ?Coconut.?

Drop legs - To dance.

Dub / Dub plate - Mixed music of reggae.

Remixed reggae music.

Dun - Done, finished, over with; kill.
Mi dun dweet. (I have finished doing it).



Dun know - Don?t know. You know already.
Yuh dun know.

Dung - Down.
Come dung. Sidung (

Come down. Sit down.)

Duppy - Ghost.

Dutty - Dirty;

Dutty gal - Tin mackerel. This

is common food for the poor or insult to way to describe a bad lady.

Dween - Doing.

Dweet - Do

it.

Facety - Bad

mannered and nasty; acting fresh.

Fambly - Family.

Fava - Looks like; resembles.

She fava har madda. (She looks like her mother.)

Feel no way - Not taken

in offense; not to worry or care.

Fi - To. This is the main Jamaican prepostion.
Mi naa waan fi do it. (I

don?t want to do it).
Fi mi, fi she, fi yu, fi ?Im- Mine, hers, yours, his. Shows possession. A fi mi cyar. (My car). Fi

dem. (Theirs.)

Fiah - Fire; also used to designate the smoking of ganja. More fiah! (More weed!)

Fit

- when used of fruits and vegetables, it means that fruit is ready to pick and is fully grown, though not necessarily



fully ripe to eat.

Flim - Film; mostly camera film.
Mi need fi buy flim. (I need to buy film .)



Flex - To chill and hang out having a time; to plan an activity.

Follow / Falla - To travel

close to, to follow or seek.
Falla back a mi. (Follow me.) Di fly a follow yu head. (The fly is seeking your head.)



Foot - Any part of the entire leg.
?Im foot a bruk means that his leg is broken.

Forward -

Future; to go or to move or to return.
Mi soon forward. (You'll see me there shortly.)

Fren? - Friend.



Frock - A ladie's dress.

Fram - From; since.
Mi dehya fram 6:00. (I have been here since

6:00). Fram when mi a pickney mi a dweet. (I have been doing it since I was a kid).

Fresh - Not ready; still

bitter or sour. Rude behaviour or ill-mannered.
Di milk still fresh. (The milk is still good.) Di pickney fresh 'een. (

The child is rude or ill mannered.)

Fu*ckery - A maljustice, something wrong and unfair; also considered a bad

word.
A fu*ckery dat. (That was a messed up thing).

while I was in the United States, last year i compiled the entire glossary, however due to my move back here, I just brought with me my 'immediates', therefore my computer is still there with all of my ETJ reference material on the hard drive or back up CDs. However I have made arrangement for them to be shipped to me so hang in there everybody, the glossary will be finished soon.
