Re: How To Speak Patois

Understanding Jamaican Patois by L. Emilie Adams, LMH Publishing Ltd.
7-9 Norman Rd, Kingston CSO. email: henryles@cwjamaica.com

This is a grammer book but very informative regarding Patois. I still can't speak it, but I am getting better at understanding it because of the book and from listening to it every day. It contains a story written in Patois and then English by her husband "Dada" Adams, that I met in Robins Bay. Mrs. Adams was in the States, so I missed her. He was humbled that I would try to find them. I will return some day and try to link up with her.

Re: How To Speak Patois

mslynne, your friend probably can't teach you because at this stage of the development of the Jamaican language writing and reading is still under development. The learning process is mostly by listening. Try some music CDs that have the words of the song.

Re: How To Speak Patois

To me I never thought or think of it as a written thing , to see it written is sometimes like reading russian, for me it is more of an idea and feeling thing.
Like american black english wha you write and wha you talk is 2 diffrent tings.

Re: How To Speak Patois

I understand it perfectly. Jomo and his family and friends no longer break out in English for me anymore. But, I destroy it when trying to speak it. So, I just don't.

Re: How To Speak Patois

You will pick it up a lot easier then you think just by listening to people talk around you. Don't fret about it.
