Jamaica leadership future

Both major political parties in Jamaica are currently putting things in place to select new leadership. Edward Seaga is stepping down from the JLP and PJ Patterson will be stepping down from the PNP before the next general election.
There are ugly campaign tactis being employed in the JLP leadership battle between Bruce Golding and Pearnel Charles. What will Jamaica's leadership look like in the future? Who are the best candidates for the jobs?

Wink Re: Jamaica leadership future

I'm sure the on-line versions of the Jamaican newspapers will have some info on these guys, (not that I can vote or anything) but it's always good to keep up with what's going on. I hate to see mud-slinging involved but, unfortunatley, its usually part of the process. Let's pray for clear and level heads to emerge from the proceedings.

This news actually isn't new. Seaga announced he would be leaving months ago. So did PJ.

What I can say is that a party with so much infighting as the JLP, doesn't present a unified image and inspire confidence that they can keep it together to run a country.

At the same time, the PNP has made some questionable economic decisions and some of it's leaders have made some very poor statements which call into question their integrity.

Re: Jamaica leadership future

Sound like a couple of other countries that I know of...like every one since the dawn of time! (Except Russia under Stalin!)

Re: JLP leadership battle

Quote:
Attorney Harold Brady was attempting, for a second straight night, to coax both sides in the JLP's accession battle to a compromise after the High Court last week stayed the weekend vote and effectively barred the party from holding its annual conference.

While Brady attempts to steer the contenders' lieutenants towards common ground, Pearnel Charles and Bruce Golding, the aspirants for the party's leadership, are preparing for a mid-December court argument over the legitimacy of the delegates' list to be used in the election - the earliest date that Justice Donald McIntosh could accommodate in his diary for the hearing.

Charles has claimed that the delegates' list is flawed.
In the meantime, JLP out-going leader, Edward Seaga, showing exasperation with the Golding campaign over the actions of its lawyers in court yesterday, suggested that he might walk away from his 11th-hour involvement in the peace process.

JLP don't look like they can lead themselves right now, much less the country.

Things looking like Seaga may just decide to come back and take leadership of the JLP since they are in an ugly battle for sucession right now.

Re: Jamaica leadership future

So right now, Bruce heads up JLP, and Portia, Omar, Peter, and Karl are vying for leadership of the PNP since PJ is leaving office in a few weeks. People say Portia is the popular favourite with the people, but many doubt she will be given the chance to lead because she is a woman, and has the perception among many of being "not sophisticated enough". Peter Phillips is the other prominent front runner.

It's gonna be interesting.

I really doubt it's because Portia is a woman...many don't believe she is capable of representing Jamaica on an international level...do you?
I repect the fact that she can hold her own in a political setting but my vote goes to Peter Phillips hands down.

Re: Jamaica leadership future

Well, it's official. Portia Simpson-Miller is the new President of the People's National Party, and will lead Jamaica as Prime Minister, when P.J. Patterson steps out of office soon.

Wow! History! Jamaica's first female Prime Minister in 2006. Wow!

Let's hope she does a good job.
