I don't know what the States should do about it but I know what Canada's doing with the 10,000 or so illegal immigrants. We're throwing them out....which I don't necessarily agree with in every case. I do think there should be in depth inquiries into which immigrants are contributing to our country or not.
Here's the arguement...right now there is a MAJOR boom going on in Canada and we don't even have enough trades people to keep up with the demand...hence the rising cost of everything to do with building. Our house prices are astronomical because of this. YET there are immigrants without status here legally working in the trades who are now getting found and deported. I mean come on! That calls for a double
These people are skilled labor in a country that NEEDS SKILLED LABOR!!!!! I have more of a problem with the ones who come here on government loans seeking refugee status and then just sit on welfare!! I KNOW this for a fact because my mom works for Catholic Immigration society and she tells me! The first thing they buy with their first welfare cheque is electronics for their homes. And they sport Phat Farm clothing but can't even speak english! WTF!!
They need to go home. We need to round them up and take them over the border. The majority are Mexican. The US has thousands upon thousands illegals and most of them are from Mexico.
Now that I have said that, if I were a Mexican I would come to the US as quick as I could. Mexico is a pit for them and they can make so muich here and then they have babies and they are legal US citizens. I understand fully why they come. But I think it should all be done legally.
Also it is a thorn in my side that I can't get my man over here for a Christmas holiday and they come over here in droves.
Jamaica miss you are right they are illegal and should go and become leagal but should this be done? The U.S. government is dragging their feet on this because some of their buddies got rich off illeagals and that will cost them more to hire leagal aliens because nobody will work for that less. Also what gets me is illeagals demonstrating that is funny they have no rights or status here and they are flying the mexican flag.I could not believe that they have pamphlets in mexico showing how to cross the border and the mexican govt. knows and supports it.What gets me is that he says his people is taking jobs even black people dont want but instead of pushing his people away he should kkep them to nake his country better its just all about money and power.
Yeah, it sure is a complex problem. In each country the dynamic is a little different, but it's never an easy answer. I agree with JC in that there are alot of skilled foreigners who should be welcomed to our land and given the opportunity to help it to flourish. Maybe we could balance that by taking the people who do nothing productive and sending them away. Abuse of the social net is terrible and does nobody any good. Also, I'm for converting Australia back into the penal colony it once was and shipping all the criminals there.
Yes JAMCAN the people who come to another country should asimulate into that culture and not the other way around, you know president bush says that the illegals are taking the jobs that americans simply wont do and that is not true because if americans are paid fairly they will take those jobs.
My only problem is the illegal issue. I believe everyone should have the opportunity to come to America, if they like. I just think they should be productive citizens who add to society. I think they should pay taxes and not rely on public assistance.
I am with JM. After filing all this visa paperwork and jumping through all these hoops, the fact that illegal aliens seem to cross our borders with little to no problems, I am getting a bit of an attitude about. I don't quite understand how they even do it. I have to prove nearly every detail of my & Jomo's lives, produce financial data, and take a written oathe that he will not be on public assistance for 4 years, with death being the only way out of it just to get the visa.

It's a big problem here in the U.K too. Mostly People from Eastern Europe and China.
I feel sorry for them 'cos they must be very desperate to endure what they do and the risks they take to get here. What really makes me angry are the greedy b*****rds
who make vast profits from trafficking in human misery.
A lot of the people smuggled into this country have been promised jobs, houses and a new life here in exchange for enormous payments to gang bosses back in their homeland. When they arrive they find the reality is very different.
Contrary to popular belief it is not easy to get benefits in the UK if you are here illegally. Consequently many end up in prostitution or working in "labour gangs" for virtually no wages and crammed 20 or 30 in a squalid little room. there was a recent case where 22 Chinese illegal workers died whilst collecting shellfish in a "labour gang". they were cut off when the tide turned and all but two were drowned. People, including children have been found asphyxiated in the back of trucks arriving from Continental Europe. Don't blame the desperate. Blame the profiteers. Fyah bun pon dem liverty Iyah.

It kind of reminds me of when Chicago tells the story of them shipping all their trash down to St. Louis.....does Australia really want all the criminals?

if the illegal immigrants were sent back can you imagine its impact? the price of produce will go through the roof. i can see why bush would say that they are taking jobs that that no one else wants. i knew someone who did that (he picked watermelons while he was between jobs) and he was miserable. being out in the hot sun laboring and doing repetitive motions was really hard on him. people who do that for a living have it pretty bad. they have to constantly move to find jobs at other farms depending on the season and the education of their children suffers. so illegals aren't necessarily taking jobs that "belong" to legals. i don't know anyone who's willing to work in fields or stand on corners waiting to be picked up for day labor work. that's why i think they do have their place in US society. and another thing, if they're sent back to mexico what's keeping them from doing the same thing they did to get here to begin with?
i feel sorry for people (like jmiss and ted) who do everything by the book and get denied. it's unfair and messed up.
Tia - I agree. The jobs that these people do aren't jobs that other people want. I picked strawberries one summer when I was 15, and it was awful and the pay wasn't very good! I haven't done a job like that since.
It is awful for the people who do things by the book, jump through all the hoops and still don't get through. But that is probably why people are entering the country illegally because it is "easier".
Personally I think in Canada we need the immigration. We have an aging population, and our population would be declining if it wasn't for immigration. I don't begrudge anyone if they can get ahead here, because it isn't all easy. My ex entered Canada illegally (from the US) and applied for refugee status - which he was granted. But it hasn't been easy for him here - he has faced a lot of prejudice and had a hard time getting a decent job.
