Fighting to sit in the back
Fighting to sit in the back
She fought for us to be in a position to see,
to be free to seat , but not to be in the back.
In fact she got arrested and moved off the buss
for that.
But we don't understand the struggle for that.
And that she was tired from working, less tired
Of sitting in the back.
Look at us now, cause all she can do is look down.
We out here fighting and racing to sit in the back.
Never wanting to shine in front of the class,
Work force, college or our community.
Never wanting to sit and then stand for elderly woman
And men who has been standing all day to fight for a minute
To be seated.
Causing havoc is what we do in the back of buses,
Being the loudest joker in the back of the class,
Instead of giving the smartest answers in front of the class.
We fight to take the back seat.
I say again,
we fight to take the back seat.
We jump to be in front of live news,
and in front of spot lights and interviews.
But where is the jumping to share good news,
Of possible scholarships, awards, or successful
Interviews!
We are still in the back! Living behind the front!
When will you realize, to be upfront means to shine
and be ahead.
When you're in the back, you're un-noticed,
un-seen, behind and at the further from most positions
in life.
We race and fight for the back,
doing the opposite to be only ahead when sitting at
a rap concert!
So we still fight to sit in the back.
Do you think Mrs. Parks would be proud of that?
Cause she was fighting from being tired,
Tired of walking way to the back,
Her strong words spoke for her weak body,
Not knowing a change and a movement would
Come from all of that.
Celebrating her struggle as we do what we
Want to, In the shame of her name, we are….
Fighting to sit in the back.
