why did you make me Black Lord

Prayer

Why Did You Make Me Black Lord?

Lord, why did you make me black?
Why did you make someone

the world would hold back?

Black is the color of dirty clothes,
of grimy hands and feet,
Black is the color of darkness,
of tired beaten streets.

Why did you give me thick lips,
a broad nose and kinky hair?
Why did you create someone
who receives the hated stare?

Black is the color of the bruised eye
when someone gets hurt,
Black is the color of darkness,
black is the color of dirt.

Why is my bone structure so thick,
my hips and cheeks so high?
Why are my eyes brown,
and not the color of the sky?

Why do people think I'm useless?
How come I feel so used?
Why do people see my skin
and think I should be abused?

Lord, I just don't understand...
What is it about my skin?
Why is it some people want to hate me
and not know the person within?

Black is what people are "Labeled"
when others want to keep them away...
Black is the color of shadows cast....
Black is the end of the day.

Lord you know my own people mistreat me,
and you know this just ain't right....
They don't like my hair, they don't like my
skin, as they say I'm too dark or too light!

Lord, don't you think
it's time to make a change?
Why don't you redo creation
and make everyone the same?

God's Reply:

Why did I make you black? Why did I make you black?

I made you in the color of coal
from which beautiful diamonds are formed...
I made you in the color of oil,
the black gold which keeps people warm.

Your color is the same as the rich dark soil
that grows the food you need...
Your color is the same as the black stallion and
panther, Oh what majestic creatures indeed!

All colors of the heavenly rainbow
can be found throughout every nation...
When all these colors are blended,
you become my greatest creation!

Your hair is the texture of lamb's wool,
such a beautiful creature is he...
I am the shepherd who watches them,
I will ALWAYS watch over thee!

You are the color of the midnight sky,
I put star glitter in your eyes...
There's a beautiful smile hidden behind your pain...
That's why your cheeks are so high!

You are the color of dark clouds
from the hurricanes I create in September...
I made your lips so full and thick,
so when you kiss...they will remember!

Your stature is strong,
your bone structure thick to withstand the
burden of time....
The reflection you see in the mirror,
that image that looks back, that is MINE!

So get off your knees,
look in the mirror and tell me what you see?
I didn't make you in the image of darkness...
I made you in the image of ME

The first part makes me very sad. Puts me into the shoes of a Black person, which I will never know. The God part is beautiful. While I understand this is a spiritual post, I have learned a few earthly items of interest:

-Blacks have less depression than whites, generally. Have you ever heard of a Black woman committing suicide? I have seen a statistic that the rate of suicide among Black women is only 1%!! Whites have a rate much higher, of course.
-Blacks have far superior body. Stronger, more muscular, healthier.
-As most of us know Blacks age more slowly. Blacks over 100 make up an overwhelming majority.
-Blacks have far superior teeth. Many never need dentist. A dentist told me this is true. An inborn thing.
-I find Blacks, generally, in my opinion, have far more self-confidence despite some brutal childhoods. Whites seem to blame their problems on their upbringing, while Blacks go forward, not blaming the past. They also have a fantastic sense of humor despite the above and the bigotry they put up with daily.
-Most great atheletes are/were Black.

Only a few, I suspect there are many more. I was strictly brought up not to be prejudiced. Only wish all were the same. Thanks for a thought-provoking and bitter/sweet post.

Re: why did you make me Black Lord

I adore this poem!!! Its funny though, as I was reading I didn't know there was gonna be a God response and I was gonna give my own. Everything the black person said they hated about themselves are the very things I love them for, and find attractive. Interesting how perspectives are so different.

And WB I really like your response too.

Re: why did you make me Black Lord

Bean, I have been thinking of this piece all day. Did you write it? If not do you know who did.
All Blacks and other minorities, keep this in mind:All we all really have, in the long run, is ourselves, our soul. The material stuff - cars, houses, clothes, etc. are fluff which can disappear at any time, it's potential junk. Our outer appearance is the same. The young chick grows old, looks fading. The beauty can be in an accident and horribly disfigured. Don't you know of people, who by commercial standards are homely, but have a wonderful happiness. (Actually some striking beauties are lacking in character, as they have gotton by on youthful looks only which no longer work as they age)
Remember the Elephant Man with the wonderful soul? Only the ignorant can't see through the trappings to see the real you. The worthy will see the real you. They are the ones you want in your life anyway.
Yes,being Black is obvious, visually. You see, my Irish ancestors were very discriminated against when the came to New York. All over were "No Irish need apply" for jobs. The WASPS shoved them in a ghetto. They were all called dirty, drunks -Shanty Irish. The only occupations the were allowed into were as cleaning people, servants. The men were considered so obnoxious (as SOME drank and fought all the time) weren't allowed into mainstream jobs. They eventually got into the railroads by sheer guts and of course as bartenders where the WASPS felt they belonged.
Sorry, I can be long-winded. BUT, the Irish were eventually accepted more readily than you because they were WHITE. Then they excelled in politics, law, business, etc. Blacks are doing the same, but it took much longer simply because of skin color. Think about how ridiculous that sounds.
So, our souls are trapped in a temporary skin. One day it will be free, soaring in the wind, over the ocean without color, class, looks.
