If you can't make it to the islands, try visiting Washington, DC's Carnival
If you can't make it to the islands this year, then perhaps you'll plan a visit to Washington, D.C., for the Caribbean Carnival. The DC Caribbean Carnival 2004 featured lots of fantastic music, great food, shopping and other events, and the 2005 event promises even more of the same.
Highlighting last year's festivities were the Pan Jam 2004, Dimanche Gras, Champs in Concert on the, the 2004 Parade, and DeSavannah, featuring a live concert and vendors.
This year's carnival will begin on
June 25, 2005.
While the list of performers isn't fully available yet, you can be sure that the music will be fantastic. Steel bands and more will perform, the Dimanche Gras costumes are fabulous, and there will be loads of shopping at DeSavannah.
A King and Queen are selected to preside over the Carnival. You can visit the DC Carnival photos for 2003 to see what you might expect, and the gorgeous costumes the "royalty" will be wearing. For lots more pictures of past DC Carnivals, visit the photo gallery. Information about past carnivals, including the 2003 Carnival, is archived on the site and can be viewed to get an idea of what to expect in the 2004 event.
Several hotels in the area will be hosting the carnival. The best way to plan is to visit the DC Caribbean Carnival website for more information and hotel links. Contact information for the DC Caribbean Carnival can be found here. You can also see an overview of other stateside and international Caribbean Carnivals. So if you're staying stateside this year - or visiting Washington, D.C., consider planning your trip around this great event. Philadelphia and Baltimore's Caribbean associations also sponsor carnivals prior to and after the D.C. event.
The parade will kick off on Georgia Ave on that saturday!
