So, this past Saturday we played an "All White Party" {edit: means your clothes, not skin, for those unfamiliar} at a local club--one that doesn't do alot of reggae. As you might see from the pix, we got a decent enough crowd.



But what made me want to post about it was something that I heard at the end of the night which I have heard over and over. As we were carrying the records etc out, the club owner complained (as club owners will do) about how people come to the event so late.

Now I've come to except this as normal... every reggae or hip-hop club event starts late and goes late. If you are expecting 500 people at the end of the night, you can expect 50 people at 11PM. You can do the "free before midnight" or raise drink prices at 1, or whatever the hell you want... but you CANNOT get people to go early.

So, I tell the bar owners--stop opening up at 8 or 9... tell your staff that you need them from 10-10:30 till 3:30 or something. There is no sense always whining to the DJs that you're paying overhead and there is nobody there, because it is just the way it goes. If you want to sell beer at 9 or 10 o'clock, open a sports bar with a pool table and stock up on Bud.

Why can they not accept this? So the question I have... is this the same where you're at? Everywhere we play round here the crowd comes late (for reggae shows/club nights)--this can't be just here?

I voted 11-12 because lets face it....I live in Calgary. The clubs close at 2. However, in somewhere great like say....Jamaica.....I dont' even LEAVE for the club til about 1AM and stay til 5-6AM.

I guess it depends where you are and whether the club is even worth being at.

Reppin the NYC scene here.....If you show up before 12:30 you are a LOSER!!! Standin around in an empty club lookin desparate. The clubs are open late and when they close they have after houirs clubs so you can go all night if you wanna!

I keep sayin I NEED to be somewhere else. This place is SOO not happening.

I'm one of those that can't stand lines and usually is the first on the dance floor! I figure since I rarely go out that when I do ....I want to make the most of it and get as much time in as I can!! I'm always with a few friends so it doesn't seem to lonely and we know how to get the party goin!!
