SIZZLA: Master of the Dancehall Rastas
The mean streets of Kingston, Jamaica have produced yet another star. Sizzla (nee Miguel Orlando Collins) grew up in the ghetto and he hasn't forgotten the struggle and hardship that prevails there. Many of his songs address the young people who live in his old neighborhood. Through music Sizzla sends them messages of encouragement and love, as well as lessons about how to treat a woman (i.e., with respect). Preaching the gospel of roots reggae and Rastafari, he delivers hardcore with a hard edge. Two years after his 1995 debut 'Burning Up,' Sizzla became the hero of dancehall with his tribute to women, 'Black Woman & Child.' Within months he also drew controversy for the homophobia that taints his Rasta good vibes on 'Praise Ye Jah.' October 8th, 2003 @ 8PM; The Bash on Ash (click to visit website) 230 W. Fifth St. Tempe, AZ 85281 480-966-8200
