Crazy idea to pick up and leave NY for JA - Jamaica Talk

So I had a crazy idea today..I think for all the wrong reasons but hey I just wanted to voice my thoughts.

Within the next yr or so get up and just go. Start over fresh in JA. I have never been there but I'm known for crazy abrupt rash moments.

I have one friend out there, my ex-boyfriend's mother. She is always telling me to go visit and stay w her. Though he has since moved on and lives w the *****.

Bad idea? I am a pastry chef so it would be educational and enlightening experience...I think

I believe a person should never attempt to make a life in a country of a different way of life and different culture without first visiting to make sure they like it...and learning the ways of the country as to respect those who call it home permanently!

My parents left for China last night...and the UN ambassador taking them there had to go through a night of training with them to teach them how to respect Chinese culture since they are meeting with high ranking members of the Chinese government. My mom was really taken back by how much she wouldn't have known otherwise and mentioned had her and my father not learned this from the ambassador...they probably would have unknowingly offended alot of people...and had no idea how to act! Not to mention the whole experience could be alot less enjoyable if they knew nothing about where they were going!
My point is..if you know nothing of the country...learn about it before you attempt to become a part of it!!! Its a different culture..and you have no idea whether or not it's a place you would be happy in!

yes you should visit and it takes more than just a few times visiting to understand the culture. Jamaica is a blessed country things do work different there but is also very similar in other aspects. Visiting and living there are 2 totally different things. Visiting is always about fun, travel, and you always have enough money, living there is about making sure you are making enough (or saved)money to pay the bills, that is always the biggest thing. Day to day it is so different than just visiting, its the same anywhere weather you move to a different city or a different country. Ive done it i know

Wouldn't make sense to suddenly up & move like that without first KNOWING a little about the place. Take a few visits, learn about the Jamaica apart from the sun, sea & sunshine the TV ads portray.

Life is short! Go for it!!

Of course be smart about it and have a back up plan of sorts if things go south.

A laaaang time ago, right after I graduated from the University, I packed my car with some money in hand and drove off into the sunset with no real plan what-so-ever... I just knew I was heading for the mountains in the West! It was one of the best things in life I ever did.

(BTW.... you may need to take in account that JA is a foreign country and a visa is needed if you plan on staying longer then 6 months.)

It's true visiting a few times would be the smart and safe thing to do. Especially because it is a different culture and way of life. I have lived my whole life in the states so there are definitely going to be major changes.

I guess I am just tired of living in NY and need a change.

I'm sure most of you understand what I mean when I say you just wanna run for the hills! lol

Do any of you lovely people live in the states and visit JA often or have moved from another country to JA?

Is finding employment difficult? The cost of living expensive?

employment is difficult, like most country's the aim is to employ locals, i have lived there before for 2 years and will god willing be back sooner than later. the cost of living....it is comparable to ours, gas, food etc all cost about the same when you change the currency, will you be paid the same as you would here.....no. average salary is about $10000us a year for a teacher, customer service, a little more for a nurse, and up to 30,000 us a year for operations manager, etc

Well I am currently looking up flights to go some time in mid Oct for at least a week. I assume that I will be staying in Trelawny with my ex's fam to save on hotel costs. So we shall see what happens.

It's not crazy.... There is a plan for all of us and if it is meant to be, then it is. Otherwise there may even be a greater adventure in store for you around the corner.

I just want to sincerely thank everyone for their comments and advice. I came close earlier this evening to buying a ticket to go visit but, deep down inside it was for all the wrong reasons. I know it wasn't for reasons for starting my own new life but rather to recuperate a past life I had with a man I am in love w that went back to JA and went back to her.

Though I feel so stupid to be putting my business out there like this..I feel that this is the only closure I will ever get.

Perhaps many years from now I will visit just as a tourist and not a love sick fool.

I just think the best thing for my own sanity is to just find other ways or places to pick up and start over.

He once said..life is an adventure. I honestly wish that I had never experienced that adventure, and walked away when God had presented the opportunity.
