New here
Hey all,
So, let me tell y'all a little about my situation...
I'm white, I live in Jersey, and My fiance is Jamaican. Without going too much into detail, (I'm supposed to be working...) I just want a little info. My man (born and raised in Kingston) wants to move back home. His mother , brothers, sisters, and his father are up here, but he wants to go back home. I'm pretty familiar with Jamaican culture, food (Oh, I can cook!), language, and all around customs, but I have no idea what it will be like living in Jamaica...Should I be apprehensive or chill out? I don't know...Help me!

Re: New here
welcome to the forum...
has he thought it thru completely and do you think he is serious or just frustrated with a current situation? i'm assuming you are to be included in this move, but has he discussed how you fit in? when is the wedding? (there is no "fiance status" in jamaica, so to have better access to work permits and visa extensions ect you should do this first if you're serious).
lots of other questions but that's a start...

Re: New here
Wow, thanks for the responses and welcomes...
I have been to JA, but only to a resort, which, I would assume, isn't exactly everyday life. The wedding is in JA, summer of 2010. He says he is serious, but I'm not entirely sure. Living in NJ can make you tired of American life real quick... it's small, cramped, and expensive as all hell. He was talking about moving back to Florida...I'm cool with whatever he wants to do, but I don't know how much thought he's actually given to this. His mom talks about moving back constantly...maybe he's just taking a cue from her? I'e lived out of the country before, but never on a carribbean island. I love his family and how accepting all of the jamaicans I've ever met have been, but this is definitely a new situation.

Girl, if u've never lived on a carribbean island, please don't move there until you have had an extended visit...I would say go for a couple of months and see how u like it...resort life is way different from real life...

i'd double that and add "esp Jamaica" after caribbean island
yes.. go for a visit for a few weeks... off resort... then go for a month or two... if you can... it's a different world.. while you might understand (some of) the culture, you can never understand the runnings until you've dealt with it on a day to day basis...

Re: New here
I know you're right, Chelby. I guess there's not really a whole lot of preparing so much as just doing it. I have a couple weeks off in October that we may use to do just what you and Ibelly advised and hit the island up for a while. I'll have to let everyone know how it goes.

Re: New here
Well, its a very simple, hard, and a proud life,if that makes sense, lol..I mean, im a city girl, i can only relax so much, ya feel me...its beautiful, but poor...Im also one of those people who always feel bad and try to fix everything so it would just be too much for me to deal with on a day to day basis. Unfortunately, we do not live in a story book and love does not conquer all....U have to be faced with real life decisions before u can sign up to be with someone...that is how i feel...i couldn't do a long distance relationship, i need to deal with someone in my face on a day to day basis, before i think about changing my life for them...anyone can tell u anything, especially if there is a motive involved...i know u say u like the culture, but that's not hard to like, its the life there that will be hard.. Trust ur gut gurl, its all u have, listen to your instinct, don't talk urself out of what feels right...If u are skeptical, pull the brakes, if he really loves u, he will understand the extremity of what he is asking of u and compromise...u two moving to fla first for about a year sounds like step one...IMO
