Smile Newbie alert! Another one just landed.

Greetings friends,
This site looks fascinating and I'm sure I'll enjoy participating; but before I introduce myself, I must ask a question. I'm a fan of the late Godfather of Rock Steady, Alton Ellis and while looking for his music on the web, I came across his late sister's website. There's a message at the bottom of the homepage on the site that seems a little critical of this forum. Just wondered if anybody knew about it. The site address is www.hortense-ellis.com

Re: Newbie alert! Another one just landed.

Thanks for the welcome JAMGAL. Real name is Selwyn (Sir Jam is a private joke between me and mi lady but decided on the spur of the moment to use it here). Planning to eventually relocate to Jamaica to join mi wife. Up to 2005 I had spent a month of each year since 1996 in Kingston checking out how married life is, but times hard now (unemployed) so I don't know when I'll see Jamaica again.
Despite me being British, wifey get turn down three times for a UK visa. Her name Marlene and she big like two of me but that's what me like - big heavy and powerful.
Found this site by chance from the reference to it on the website mentioned in my first post.
Anything else you want to know, just holler.

"she big like two of me" <----she doesn't whip your @ss for saying that? When I first read it I thought it was the reason that she could not get a visa.

Welcome to the site!

I hope she has her visa now and you guys don't have to be apart. I'll give you two thumbs up for the big girls . All people need love whether the two foots like mop sticks or big and plump like the wife. Wish you guys all the best in love.

Welcome to the site!
She's totally cool about my admiration for plus size Caribbean ladies - to the point of calling me (from the gate) when she sees one coming along as she minds her stall. I'm 5'6" and 140 pounds while Marlene is 5'10" and 350 pounds. Her four (adult) daughters (no sons) are more or less the same size as their mother and so she is not all alone while waiting on me.
I just wish she could get into the UK as easy as I can get into Jamaica.
I love Kingston but haven't travelled so much outside it. If anybody knows Washington Boulevard where Duhaney Park Mall is, I was once stood at the junction almost opposite the mall for over an hour holding a live fowl - a gift for Marlene from her daddy. Two of us made the journey and the other guy asked me to wait a few minutes but it turned into something like 75 minutes.
Passing drivers were making comments about white man holding a white fowl. As I reached home, Marlene just wrung the chicken's neck like an expert, and I asked myself why her daddy couldn't have killed it before handing it to me. My journey would have been a lot easier.

Re: Newbie alert! Another one just landed.

"What about the Arawak Indians" asked Burning Spear in his song "Christopher Columbus".
Does anybody know a site (or a book) that discusses the early history of Jamaica prior to Columbus' invasion of the island.
Most histories of Jamaica seem to concentrate on slavery days, National Heroes or the trade union activites of Bustamante and Manley.
Sorry if the board actually has a history section. I couldn't see one while glancing through.
Slavery days have gone and Jamaica is now a fully independent nation, but the poorest people in Jamaican society still suffering hardship and discrimination.
If there is no history section, can the admin introduce one. There must be people on here anxious to contribute and many more anxious to learn.

Before 1492, there was no know historical recordings about that region of the carribbean. The little known is all based on anthropological research and pertains to the Tainos (Arawak) Indians of the region and not particularly about Jamaica.

Try "The Tainos: The Rise and Decline of the People Who Greeted Columbus" by Irving Rouse.
Happy reading.

The guy who left the comment is a member here, odd that I member would leave such a cold comment:

"
I had intended to provide a link to the Everyting Jamaican forum
to afford visitors to this site the opportunity to learn about and discuss all things Jamaican
However I discovered that not only have the people on there never heard of Hortense Ellis
but were extremely hostile to the idea of me placing a link back to this site and to the MySpace page.
Although I have experienced immense friendship during my visits to and stays in Jamaica, my idea
to link my site with a Jamaican forum has been reluctantly abandoned"

I can't think of his name but everyone was really nice to him. There were some comment(s) made about him linking to a site but nobody was nasty. I guess we can't please every postal worker in the world.
