Hello from Chi-town
I see another Chi-town newbie posted today, and I just wanted to introduce myself as well. I've been looking at some conversations and feel this is going to be a great adventure. I belonged to a forum like this before but it was for natural sistahs.....
I everything Jamaica - I go every year, love the food, have a love affair with the music, the people, the culture etc, etc. etc. My boyfriend is still there, I still have problems understanding when he's talkin fast.
There has to be someplace other than the Wildhare in Chicago to hear good music and dance. And I can't seem to find good food, unless I cook it myself. Any suggestions are welcomed.
Catcha later an ting!

Hey! Welcome! Glad to have you. Hope you post and stay active...as for the food...hmm...ask around. There should be quite a few restaurants in Chicago.

Re: Hello from Chi-town
Hello! I am in Chicago too! I actually do some promotional stuff for the HARE and Exedus and my husbasnd works at the HARE. But am afraid you are right... not many places for Reggae Music other then those 2! There were a couple doing a dancehall 'ting for a while but not sure if they have survived. Seems strange with the large Caribbean community -- some nice summer festivals in the summer months at Washington Park and some visits straight from yard from bands around the city...
Sounds like we are similar! Big Up and glad to meet you!

Re: Hello from Chi-town
oh! and food! Maxine's on the south side! Caribbean Bakery on Howard Street - great bread and Jerk. Also a place by Clark and Howard that replaced a place called Linnettes - but i have not eaten there yet (miss Linnettes). Blue Mountain Cafe may still be around on the north side. Really great Belizean place near the Howard Red Line... are you new in the area? The Caribbean neighborhoods are around Washington Park on the southside and Howard and Clark on the northside. I go up there to a little grocery coz they sell tins of Ackee and know how to cut Oxtail and have good saltfish. Also is an african grocery on Broadway, north of Montrose with good veggies and fruit - sometimes BREADFRUIT! Are you new to Chicago?

Breadfruit-
Thanks for the information. No I'm from Chicago, however new to the Northside. Before I would order saltfish at the local Cub Foods - but I moved so it's been an issue. How often do you get over to the WildH? We should def talk more. Keep me up on when a good band is there, I also like soca & calypso too. Hoping to go to Trinadad carnivle in Feb.

Re: Hello from Chi-town
i dont get to the Hare too often... i prefer to wait till there is a show i really want to see. They were doin' a Socca nite once a month for a while but have not for a couple of months.
So head up to Howard St to buy Saltfish -- otherwise some of the Latino markets are great places to find it as well. Also good places to find yam, green banana etc.

Re: Hello from Chi-town
Yeah parking, cover and 2 drinks equal my rent!!! No just kidding but I moved north to be closer to the Hare, so I can go more often, which hasn't happened yet. Well if you hear of any good bands or Socca night let me know.
