Health Care while abroad

This is just a general question, something I've been curious about.

If you move to Jamaica (or any island), can you keep your health care insurance from your own country and go back for medical care?

But you could still keep your Ontario insurance? I mean just keep it in Canada as opposed to cancelling all together and get insurance in the new country.

Re: Health Care while abroad

Why would she want to keep her health insurance in Canada if she is going to be LIVING in another country altogether. Traveling back and forth just to receive medical care would be very expensive.

Re: Health Care while abroad

This really only applies to people from Countries with Socialized Medicine and Americans on Medicare and such. Most Americans have private insurance and only have access through their employers.

With social medicine...Canadian and US Medicare, the ability to use you insurance in another country is very limited. You can however use the benefits as long as you maintain your citizenship in your native country.

Star, if you have a major medical emergency or a have an illness such as cancer that requires either a specialist or a specific treatments, you will find that the treatment is expensive if it's available at all.

For example..In ochi..I fractured my ankle...it took 3 trips to 3 diff doctors/hospitals to even get a decent x-ray. Obviously in Kingston things are much better, but you can't expect 1st world medical facilities in any 3rd world country. That's why everyone takes advantage of any access to US/Canadian health care for emergency sake.

Thanks for telling me, I really needed to know this for my personal future references. I knew this American lady once who was living in Ochi with her children and her daughter got sick and she flew back to America to get the care her daughter needed and she ended up staying in America after that.

I also could tell you a story about a couple who came from Jamaica to get 1st world help for their daughter, for that purpose you mention and ended up with 3rd world medical help and the Jamacan couple ended up with a 1st class lawsuit and won.

It definitely would be interesting to visit the medical facilties in Jamaica.

I believe that Americans cannot use Medicare in any country except the US.

Not that I know of Jagirl. I know that if you go to the hospital in Mobay you must have someone to care for you while you are there. The nurses which are very few and far between do not do your bidding. If you need medication, you must send your prescription down to the pharmacy with a friend or relative to have it filled and to pay for it. It does not go on the bill.

You also must bring your own sheets. And I guess clean, because it wasn't very neat when I visited a friend who was there when she gave birth to twins. There were paper containers under beds, and other dry refuse floating around the ward. UGH!

It also does not have air conditioning and was very uncomfortable, at least for me. There are open areas that bring in the breeze, as the hospital is on the hill in Mobay, but it still was very hot in July.

Miss are you kidding me?? A hospital in Mobay was like this?? Isn't Mobay supposed to be like the metropolitan area in Jamaica? I'm shocked.
