Need some suggestions for work visa

I am posting this for my boss.

She is a board certified family physician (general pratitioner in UK), and board eligible in Geriatric Medicine and Addiction Medicine.

She is in her mid 50's and independently wealthy, and is interested in retiring and pursuing a life in Jamica. In the past she has lived on a boat going from Carribbean Island to Island for over two years, so is fairly well aquianted with what she's getting into. She has already rented a house about an hour from Negril.

She does want to get a work permit, as she anticipates doing some basic on call work for one of the Sandal's resorts -- she'll be the only physician near the resort. However, the Ministry of Labor requires a job offer, and she will be and indepent contractor. Sandal's has agreed to provide an exam room, etc.

In addition, she would like to participate in the Health System at least part time to provide medical care to Jamacians in the area. She is willing to forgo her salary if the expenses of the office can be paid for. She has worked for the National Health Service Corp in underserved areas her entire career in the US.

The Ministry of Health will not consider an application for a physician license w/o a work permit, and the Ministry of Labor will not consider a work permit w/o a firm job offer -- which she won't have because she's not being directly employed by anyone.

Anyone know of a good attorney or other person to try to walk this through the capital there?

Thanks
Sgent

If she is planning on doing something with Sandals. They should take care of everything. They did it for me even sent me off the Island and had a driver take me around in Miami to get everything taken care of.

Re: Need some suggestions for work visa

I opened the restaurant in Upton when it was the first and only 5 star restaurant in the Carribean and I was a Sous Chef at the Ocho Rios location.

I spent about 10 years there so if anyone has any questions please feel free to ask. Will be moving back within the next year once I get everything here straight.

Re: Need some suggestions for work visa

I'm late on this post, but maybe this will help others.

A very easy way to get a work permit if you have a few dollars is to basically own a business. this does not need to be a brick and mortar location.

You can contact a local attorney and purchase what is called a "shelf Corp". These are dormant corporations that already have tax numbers and articles of incorporation. You can purchase these for a few hundred US. Most shelf corps operate the same as a corp here. You have a director who has shares. Once you are the legal director of your corp (BTW, you're corp doesn't actually have to do anything, but if you provide services, have them provided under your corp). You can take the docs to get your work visa. Very simple process from there. Usually a day in Kingston to take your pict and get your stamp. At that point you can go to the JA embassy and get a multiple entry visa good for 3 years.

Other options of course are to own property or marry a J'can.
