I was born in Jamaica but left when I was seven years old. Although that was many many years ago, I still wish to return in a few years. I am currently persuing a career in law and has reached half way. I would like to know that I making the right decisions so that the transition will be as straightforward and simple as possible on my return.
Is there anyone out there who has any idea of the steps I need to take to become a lawyer in Jamaica. Your help would be very much appreciated. Kind regards NickiCS |

Re: How do I become a Jamaican lawyer for when I return to JA?
I have returned to JA four times on holiday, the last being last month, got back two weeks ago. I know that this was still not enough time to get a good feel and understanding of the country but the desire is still there.
By smooth transition I meant that I don't want to have to do alot more studying to qualify out there (so would like to make the right moves now). I have already done 5 years and still have another four in front of me. I have my husband and baby boy and would like to extend my family as soon as possible, so the less time left to study the better. |

Re: How do I become a Jamaican lawyer for when I return to JA?
Just wondering, if anyone knew the answer to this since I am in a similiar situation. I'm currently a first year law student and plan to relocate to Jamaica upon graduation. I don't want to spend many additional years in school after completing so many in the states. Any suggestions?

Re: How do I become a Jamaican lawyer for when I return to JA?
I never studied Law (per se), but I do know that the Jamaican Legislature is based on the British Judiciary System.
I also know that to practise law in Jamaica (apart from having a JD or LLB) you must pass the Jamaican Bar Exam (not the drinking one. LOL) and be a member of the Jamaican Bar Association. If you wish contact them: Jamaican Bar Association, 78-80 Harbour Street, Kingston, Jamaica, Tel: (809) 922-2319 They can tell you all you need to know. All the best in your career. -Alex93 |

Quote:
You will need to do another 6 Mos at UWI and then take the Barrister exam.
