Question Air Jamaica versus other airlines

With everything in life there are good things and bad things. Have anyone ever flown on Air Jamaica? What was your experience like? Would you fly with them again? If not which airline would you refer & why?

Re: Air Jamaica versus other airlines

Re the cost of flying, airpline business is very tough. Its either big profit or big losses. The fuel and mantenance costs are the biggest factors, so for a small airline like Air Jamaica with mostly international flights (over water) to compete with big airlines like AA, etc is very hard.
That said, Air Jamaica is a piece of Jamaica that flies. Its Jamaica from you enter the door. They want to arrive on-time but will take the extra time to put the plane down on the ground instead of dropping it and doing a handbrake turn for the gate. The stewardesses are not on pension and they actually smile honestly.

Finally, Air Jamaica, for its size is better than most when it comes to the quality of their pilots, service, food and the discipline in their maintenance. Enough said.

Re: Air Jamaica versus other airlines

Well said Samba. I've never flown Air Jamaica but if its anything like the crazy Jamaicans that go to Ja on Air Canada I'd like to get in on the action.

Jamaicans are the ONLY people I know who actually CLAP when the plane lands! I think its so cute! But were they relieved because no major catastrophe's or just happy to be home?

BOTH

I truly beleive that our pilots are one of the safest in the skies. have not heard of a catastrophic accident or crash yet. I agrre with Samba that they do have a very rigid maintenace program for such a small airline.

The stewardesses are very helpful and they always have a smile. The flight was smooth and the food was good. Free champagne, wine and beer. You don't have to pay $5 for the headsets to watch a movie. They just collect them at the end of the flight.

Re: Air Jamaica versus other airlines

I've always enjoyed flying on Air Jamaica when I can. This time I'll be using Continental because it was about $150 cheaper. PS I've ALWAYS clapped upon landing in MoBay, couldn't imagine it any other way. Again though, never had a problem with Air Jamaica and use it when I can afford to.

How would you rate the service compared to other airlines that you have flown on recently?

Re: Air Jamaica versus other airlines

On a scale of 1 - 10 (10 being the best), AJ would have to be a 10! The stewardesses really make you feel comfortable and the flight is so smooth. The landings are much better than the other major airlines. The food on American and Continental Airlines is horrible! Just AWFUL! And, I love my ****tails so I was very happy about the complimentary champagne, beer or wine. Also, AJ makes it possible for people who otherwise could not afford to fly first class to do so. I couldn't fly first class on AA or Continental because it would cost about $2,500. However, Air Jamaica offers first class rates of $1,200 and sometimes a good travel agent can find you a fare for under $1,000. I'll be taking my grandmother to Barbados in April and I am surprising her with first class seats. It will be my first time flying first class and hers too. I have Air Jamaica to thank for that. Lastly, I love supporting black businesses. I will fly AJ as often as I can.

Re: Air Jamaica versus other airlines

Reading all the nice things about AJ I wish I have flown with them. They don't come to my city so its Air Canada all the way. I do have to say though that AC is very pleasant too. I've noticed when I fly to Mobay on AirCanada they seem to have mostly Jamaican flight attendants which is a real nice touch since its mostly Jamaicans flying to Jamaica.
Also AC fares are very reasonable depending on when you go, plus free headsets. No free liquor though! And they serve carribean chicken on flights to JA.

Maybe someday I'll have the pleasure of trying out AJ.

Smile Re: Air Jamaica versus other airlines

Hello Jamcan:
I am new here, but I just had to jump in and let you know that A.C was not alway that way even up to last June, they were reputed to treat Jamaicans as if they were luggage. Now that Butch from AJ could not stand by any longer and let Jamaican put up with these behaviour, they (AC) is now changing.
I own a B&B in Jamaica so I have to fly on a regular basis, and BOY i can tell you some stories!!
OH BTW. Air Jamaica will start here again in Feb.

Re: Air Jamaica versus other airlines

ISTAR, are you Canadian? Do you live in Canada? I'm just curious.....
I flew to JA in March and May of last year and found them to be pretty good, but like I said I have nothing to compare it with. That's the only airline that can get me there when I want to go. I'd love to fly AJ but it doesn't come here. I didn't experience anything negative on AC but I'm white, so that's a major factor.

And by the way...welcome to ETJ. Jumping into any convo here is appreciated!

Re: Air Jamaica versus other airlines

I'm in Calgary. I always fly through T.O. to get to JA but always Air Canada. There's never an option in my travels to hook up onto AJ.
