Moving 2 St. Ann
Im a 21yr old from New Orleans, La. I want 2 move 2 St Ann. I have a high school diploma with some college. I wouldnt necessarily be lookin 4 a career, jus a job 2 live as a local and get by. I plan on moving with enough money to live off of for about a year and a half.
How hard is it 2 find an apartment in st ann and how much should i expect 2 pay 4 rent and utilities?
Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated

ITs been stated in theese kind of threads before.
Dont go to Jamaica looking for a job unless you have schooling, and are going in a feild where they need it.
Jobs are hard to come by as it in Jamaica.
So going an taking away Local Jobs, specially in this Recession..
well kind of unfare.
Anywayas the information I can get you is
You would only make about 50$ a week.
If you are working full time.
Its not an appartment,
it would either be a room with through a local.
Or rent a little house
Its around 90 u.s for water & electricity each month,
and than rent is usually 50-70. u.s
Food is the same price as here in North America.
A little cheaper for vegetables.

Re: Moving 2 St. Ann
thanks 4 the reply...
I understand what u are saying about work.
I cant seem 2 find a job in the u.s. and the last thing i would want to do is take a local's job in a country whose unemployment rate is worse than my own. At least Jamaica has laws that try to enforce employers 2 hire locals over foreigners..more than i can say about the u.s.
But that is why i want to have enough to live off of for at least a year or so. Maybe even enough to help invest into a locals small buisness...but i didnt think renting would be so low..rent is less than utilities??
What is life like in St. Ann?

Re: Moving 2 St. Ann
What part of St Ann are you thinking of cause its a large parish? I used to live in St.Ann 1800ft above sea level in the hills....i personally loved it but again it depends on what your looking for etc. Like others had stated you really should visit first see if its what your looking for, its hard for others to describe cause what I may like is not what yuour looking for or could live with.
Im simplistic...i dont need a whole bungle of material things, a big house, etc.

Investing in your own buisness is smart,
Mek a likkle, hire someone local. H
elp the economy yuh know
Life in Jamaica... is life in Jamaica.
Theres not really different lifestyle for each Parish. :S
Theres always partys, most police dem corrupt, its community based so you live in a community forever and get to know the people and everyone knows everyone in that area.
But the most I can say is go on vaccation and search around for an Area you like.
BUT
My Grandmas friend loved JA on Vacation.
When she moved there, it was so different that she didnt like it.
JA isnt for the faint hearted.
You will see things you dont want to, you wont agree with how some people live........
BUT as Damswell said she loved it.
BUT!
from my understanding she knew ALOT about Jamaica and there livety, and had been alot before she decided to make a move and live there

I think the figure given for rent, 50-70 (US$), was per day rather than per month. For a month, I think you would probably pay between 300-800 (US$).

esp with the caucassian factor... unless you have the right connections, you likely won't get the same rates as a jamaican might for a room...
it's also a good idea to consider a gated residence/community/area as there are those who may target you because you are foreign (either just because or because they think you have more)... as much as you want to pay hommage to the "one love" philosphy, it's best to keep your own interests first when the actions of a few can have real consequences on you...
that's just my thoughts

Re: Moving 2 St. Ann
The place i rented in St Ann was $7000J a month for a 1 bedroom, hall, bathroom and kitchen. It still is that same price from what i heard from the lady we rented it from. It all depends on where, the closer to the coast the more expensive.

Re: Moving 2 St. Ann
I may be a caucasian foreigner but I would definitely be living on a budget. lol..Ive lived in poverty most of my life, especially after Katrina, so anyone who sees dollar signs cuz of my skin would be foolin themselves.
I plan on making a visit first 2 see what its like for myself but I dont think a gated community is what im lookin for..i need it 2 be as simple and affordable as possible..I strongly believe in fearing no man but God..
Dams...wut was your experience like in St. Ann?

Re: Moving 2 St. Ann
my best advice would be to go and make some (genuine) connections/relationships first... most people who make a move there from overseas do so with those strongly in place, especially if they are not already very very well off (and connections are good to have if you have money still).. without those, IMO what you are looking to do may prove to be very difficult, if not dangerous...

Re: Moving 2 St. Ann
and for the record, that advice would be true of anyone moving anywhere, especially to an area where poverty is prevalent...
friends of my family (a couple) had visited DR about a half a dozen times and loved it each and every time coming back saying how wonderful and kind the people were... they decided that it was their calling and they moved there on one of those humanitarian/missionary type deals... they had/brought very little but were confident that because they were doing well and only meant well, they would be fine... they were robbed and beaten and left for dead within about a month of doing so (they both survived although the man is still eating thru a tube and will never walk again)...
about 7 years ago my cousin went to a "small" (pop 700k) chinese village on one of those non-profit teach english deals... he landed and was beaten and robbed of everything he came with (which amounted to his clothes/belongings and the equivilent of about 300US) within 48 hours.... ended up calling my aunt and uncle to send him home on the next available flight... the whole ordeal took nearly a week, with replacing ID, and tickets, and other "foreign taxes" that the chinese authorities imposed ended up costing my aunt and uncle over $15,000 CAD... my cousin is 6'3 and nearly 350lbs and solid... he says he cried every day he was in that country...
it can be a cruel world...
sorry, dont mean to be negative, i just don't feel people shouldn't do these types of things with rose coloured glasses... too many horror stories out there...

Re: Moving 2 St. Ann
My experience in St Ann was positive, but again I had family and many friends there when I moved there. I tend to disagree with te gated community thing....but then again thats not something that exists where I was living nor is it somewhere I would live.
I was the only Caucasian if you will in my community, never had any problems. Loved the apt i lived in and would move back to that same one again if it came back up from rent.
I also have rented a house in Moneague and it was a huge 2 bedroom, bathroom, hall, kichen, dining room and verandah, grilled car port was $23000j. Also lived in Bridgeport near Portmore, again not a grilled community, and never encountered any problems.
My preferences can and most likely are different than others. I live a very simplistic life there, do not require all the frills of farrin life. I live comfortably and well within my means.
