Future plans to move to Jamaica

I live in Florida right now but in less than a year i am joining the military. As everyone knows America is failing as a country, the economy is basically gone and we are even worrying about nukes. I don't want to be around when this country collapses or worse. I have looked into New Zealand but have settled on Jamaica just because I love the beaches, people, tight knit communities, and lets not forget about the herb. By the time i am ready i should have around $ 75,000.00 saved and military experience under my belt. I would be looking into being a cop. If that doesnt work for me, or I change my mind, then I would be doing something to do with tourism. I was thinking about moving to Negril or something very close to it. What exactly do I have to do to move to there? Are there openings for tourism and/or police officers?

Re: Future plans to move to Jamaica

have you been to jamaica before?

i have friends who are kingston cops who are always trying to recruit me (lol) the pay is not what you would likely consider good, but there is probably opportunity there if you're serious....

Re: Future plans to move to Jamaica

America is not failing as a country. lol All countries have their problems and we're going through some trying times at the moment. But if you'll be happier elsewhere then go for it!

How much do you know about Jamaica? If you're not reading the Jcan newspapers online then I suggest you start so you know what you're getting into. It's not all sunshine, sandy beaches and herb, you know that?

It's very unlikely that you'll get a job in the tourism sector unless you have some specialized skills. Otherwise, those jobs go to Jamaicans, as they should.

Good luck.

You do realise that marijuana is illegal in Jamaica, and that if you intend to be a police officer, you cannot buy, sell, possess, or smoke it. You would be duty bound to irradicate it.

This is an unfair generalization, and an untrue statement. Not all Jamaican police officers are corrupt. Some are. Some aren't. Just as some US/Canadian/UK etc. police officers are corrupt, while some aren't.

I agree with this 100%.

It's funny though, I talk to a lot of Jamaicans when I'm there and I've never met a single one who hasnt' said the cops are corrupt and they don't trust them.

I guess there's one exception, a guy whose brother is a cop. But other than that................ I find it kind of surprising. Maybe it's because the majority of people I know there are younger, under 30?

Every Jamaican knows that there are serious corruption issues in the Jamaican police force, but that doesn't mean that all the police are corrupt. In truth, nobody can say for sure just how many are corrupt and how many aren't. What we can say is that too many are corrupt - if even 1 cop is corrupt, then that is too many. So far for the year, there have been over 50 cops brought up on corruption charges. That's too much. But it would still be unfair to the good cops there to say that all Jamaican police are corrupt.

Please, there are tons of corrupt cops in America, they just don't get caught as easily!
