Re: want to move to jamaica in a year

I would be better off financially living here for sure.
I don't even think I need any luxuries - although power and plumbing would be nice and for some those are luxuries.

Re: want to move to jamaica in a year

My estimate is based on a family of 5 with a new vehicle remember... And yes, Jamaica is not cheap, esp for those who are picky and want to have necessities of their north American lives...

Re: want to move to jamaica in a year

I have no children and am not picky. I don't go out to dinner, get takeout, or buy clothes much. Healthcare would be my biggest concern.

Re: want to move to jamaica in a year

i'm lucky in that i have emergency out of country health coverage for my family (-my husband) through my employer for the duration of my stay... i will need to cover well baby visits and other non-emerg medical (and dental, we're all getting checked/filled/cleaned ect before we leave!)...

they do have out of country emerg travel insurance coverage for extended stays... it's somewhere in the range of 60-70CAD a month if i remember correctly ( i think you can't book more than 6 months of coverage at a time, but can be covered for up to 10 m of the year? do look into the details)... just about every major insurance provider has it's own variation, google travel insurance and you'll be given tons of options... it's not really appropriate for those looking to make permanent moves tho

Re: want to move to jamaica in a year

Yes I was quoted more than 100 a month through Blue Cross but I would get it if I was there short term. I can't leave that long with my job and then school. If D gets approved to visit, he will come this year for a few months and then next year for a few months. I will then go for a visit when I finish school, and we will go from there. I'm not a person of large means, and I have one income - but I always seem to have what I need.

Re: want to move to jamaica in a year

If you are out of Ontario for more than 6 months your health coverage(OHIP) becomes void until you come back for at least 90 days then it will be reinstated. Although out of country id different it is when you come back that you have the waiting period to reinstate.
When i lived in JA thats what happened to me.

Re: want to move to jamaica in a year

I haven't lived in Ontario for 20 years but when I moved to any other province my coverage was good for 90 days - then I had to switch it over.
Other provinces have different rules and policies.
I wouldn't be in JA for more than 6 months either - also for tax purposes.
Ideally, I want to retire part time in JA and part time here.
D and I have talked about 10 years from now living that way. It will depend on our career paths.
So Damnswell, you lived in JA for a year? What did you do for work there?

Re: want to move to jamaica in a year

I lived in jamaica for 2.5 years, had a car we ran taxi with. I would like to live winters there and summers here. It paid the rent, and all bills, etc but in order to go back I would need to work at least part-time i can't not work and have nothing to do all the time! I have no kids but even if i did i would need the adult time!!! LOL

Re: want to move to jamaica in a year

That's awesome Damswell - what a great experience! I would love to not have to work. I have so many hobbies and I spend about an hour each day working out. I would spend half the day excercising if I didn't have to work - weights, speed walking, swimming, etc. Oh to dream! lol
I don't think I would want to do the taxi thing but that is a good idea.

Same for Alberta, you have to be here half the year to maintain AHC.
