Seriously considering moving to Jam.

Well, it's over and the Imperial Idiot has another 4 years in the once respectible office of the President of the USA. I don't think I want to live here anymore. So, I actually have been thinking about moving to Jam. How do I find out about the requirements for a US citizen to move there? I was medically retired from the Navy, have a pension that would convert from USD to over $1,000,000 JD/year. Is that enought to live off of (it's barely enough here)? How do I research medical care there? I was curious though if anybody knows anything about the film & tv industry in Jam or can hook me up with someone who knows about it there. How do I find out about property rates? Do you think I could use my VA home loan program there to buy property? Are there any Jam real estate websites with pictures? How reliable are they?

Re: Seriously considering moving to Jam.

Check http://www.top5jamaica.com/realestate.html for real estate websites. The site Top5jamaica.com also has links to other govt. and private sector institution websites that can give you information you may find useful about moving here.

There are financial institutions online. They may have some info on mortgages:

http://www.ncbja.com
http://www.jmmb.com
http://www.jnbs.com
http://www.vmbs.com

Check the media websites. They may have classifieds (if the online versions don't, then try to get a hold of the printed newspapers)-

http://www.jamaica-gleaner.com
http://www.jamaicaobserver.com
http://www.radiojamaica.com

For work permit info etc. you should check the Ministry of Labour
http://www.lmis-ele.org.jm/

You can also check the Jamaica Information Service (JIS)
http://www.jis.gov.jm

Re: Seriously considering moving to Jam.

As for your salary, well a lot of people here earn less than that, and they make it work, but the standard and comfort level may not be what you are used to. You will have to consider things like the cost of mortgage/rental for your home, utility bills, transportation (gas, bus, taxi) and food. See if you can find some figures on average earning, and the cost of living here so you can know where you would be positioned in terms of your earnings and your ability to live according to a standard you are comfortable with.

You can find some information on the film industry at http://www.investjamaica.com/
They also have some links to other info about work permits etc.

Here's a link to one of the more popular production companies here: http://www.mediamix-palm.com/

ActorRod, I am very happy for you if you do decide to move to Jamaica. It's something I wish I could do permanently but I'll just have to settle for my next trip. Good luck to you and Godspeed!

Re: Seriously considering moving to Jam.

Just buggin ya ROD. I know I'm Canadian so I can't give you all you need unless you come up here. Good luck finding what you need and let me know for sure if you're gonna make it up this way because I used to live in Vancouver. And I know some people in the film industry up there.

Re: Seriously considering moving to Jam.

Great sites BountyX. ActorRod and JamCan I have been thinking of abandoning the USA also and moving to Vancouver but I hear the Canadian govt isn't too fond of the idea of a bunch of American expatriots moving in.
