Take Eco's advice. Finish school, then if you want, come to Jamaica, or wherever, and start your own business, or at least get a better job which allows you to cover the cost of the work permit without problems.
Again Ditto.
RP... you have a lot of growing up to do my friend. I don't mean to sound condescending but you have come to a site that has MANY knowledgeable folks... I suggest you ask a few more questions before you start spouting off about what college means with one semester under your belt.
I would suggest you get involved in a charitable organization that does work in JA and spend some time there before you spend any money trying to get a visa and work permits, etc. You also might consider the Peace Corp, although positions are limited in JA... but you could certainly get places somewhere in the Caribbean if being on an island is the experience you want.
You should keep researching and asking questions...

If $1500 is so "disgusting" and makes you not even want to visit JA, I'm kinda having a hard time figuring out why you think you might want to live there!

I guess the part where I said what it means to me means nothing? I cannot have a personal opinion? If someone tells you that your personal opinion is wrong they come off as nothing but condescending and very conceited.

Paying 7-8months on a years salary just to have a job for a 12months seems disgusting and anyone who has commonsense would agree. I also said I would not want to live there after finding out about this fee. While I am aware it is in place so no one comes and steals the job from a Jamaican, it also tells me I am very unwelcome and unwanted, which I have no problem accepting.
To the other person who recommend Puerto Rico, I have already been there for a months stay and it was very beautiful and fun, yet I would now like to move onto a different island.
Re: So the more I reserach the more I find out it is impossible to move to Jamaica.
I have not read all the replies but personally I do not think you should ever consider moving to Jamaica unless you have something to offer...aka your own business. Especially one where you can hire local people and give jobs.
To move there and expect to get a job at a resturant or wheverever...beyond selfish and you should be ashamed of yourself. You can make money in the US...there is not enough jobs for every Jamaican first off....and those lower level jobs....those are the most important to them because alot of people are not educated enough to aim higher.
And then to complain about the price of a work permit??? If that is sooo overwhelming to you....why would you move there?? They don't need more poor people...they need people who can contribute to the economy!!
I don't mean to sound harsh...but maybe you need to take another trip and go behind the resorts and tourist industry and see the real suffering in Jamaica. Go into the hills and see families that have NOTHING....go see kids who don't even have shoes!! Go see people begging because they have no food to eat!!
Then tell me you want to go work some low end job a Jamaican needs more than you...and then come and complain about the work permit price!!

I never said your opinion was wrong. It's just not based on very much information. Condescending? Guilty as charged. But I'm okay with that... Good luck. and btw. I'm the one who recommended Puerto Rico and Cayman... but quite frankly, I agree with the others. I don't think you should go ANYWHERE until you've grown up a little.

Wow this website is full of people who are full of themselves. First you say you do not want to come off as condescending and then in the next post you say you do... Which is it? I personally feel spending $30,000 on your own business would be more beneficial than giving it to colleges which are businesses in themselves and are there to make money first and educate you second. Please do tell how that is not based on information.
I also hope you do not live in the US ASH_113 because if you did you would know it is in an economic slump in itself and many people are losing their jobs daily. Try to turn on any news channel to see this. My father is losing his job for the fourth time in six years because four huge companies closed down or did MAJOR cuts in their staff. Now as for yourself maybe try reading a little bit (10 posts would take longer than 1-2 minutes to read) before posting because you are coming off as a moron. I CLEARLY stated I did not want to move there when I found out the price of a work permit.
Re: So the more I reserach the more I find out it is impossible to move to Jamaica.
I am from the US originally....living in Canada currently. I'm aware of the current economic crisis.....but we still have it much better than most of the folks in Jamaica. We are lucky enough to still have options...even if it's just the burger king down the street!!
And I stated my opinions on the subject...that does not make me a moron! In fact after reading other's replies..I'd say we are fairly in sync with our opinons!
If the permit is to much...stay home...move else where. It is what it is...and it's a heck of a lot easier than trying to get a permit to work in countries like the US!!
Judging by your attitude...you wouldn't last in Jamaica anyways!! If I was you...I'd find a new direction!!
Remember most the people on this site are Jamaican..many still live there...the rest are people who are married to a Jamaican, or travel to Jamaica frequently. I would say your quite off base in saying people are full of themselves...I would say no nonsense and realistic...with no time for juvanile attitudes.
I'm finished talking about this with you. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do!

I'm not putting you down if you want to wait tables for the rest of your life. My little brother waits tables at a place that serves $7 lunches and $10 dinners. He lives to make just enough to pay his rent and support his hobby of playing in a band on the weeknights. He likes the fact that he can leave his job and not think about it while he is relaxing in the evening. He can also party all night and his does not affect his ability to wait on tables. I can't think of anyone who says "when is Erin going to do something with his life" since we all know that he is happier than any of us.
Good luck when you find your path
Interesting post. Good for your brother for living life on his terms.

Why don't you just call me out? I'm the one who you are speaking of, yes?
This site isn't FULL of people who are condescending. Just me. In this thread. And the first time I was NOT trying to be but then... after I continued reading, I didn't care anymore. LOL. So... to answer your rhetorical question... it's BOTH!
And perhaps you don't listen to the news either... again, you don't have the full picture when you begin spouting off... ASH is in Canada, but she's American and her family is in the USA. So you can stop preaching to her about the US economy... BUT I DIGRESS... the entire WORLD is in an economic "slump" as a result of a global economy. I'm sorry for your father's struggles, as I am for all those families who are losing jobs. I'm especially sorry because he's probably got the added strain of paying for your college, which you obviously don't see the value of. So maybe you should put YOUR brilliant plan into action and go out and get a job HERE. Drop out of college and see how hard it is HERE to support yourself without a college degree. I promise...it won't be any easier or less expensive in JA. That is a total myth. But then again, if you had REALLY done your homework, you'd already know that.
But I'm outta here. I don't see the point of this thread any longer.

Paying for my college? Seeing that I have worked since the age of 13 and have saved since then I have been paying for my own college and is most likely why I see it as a money pit and nothing but a business trying to take your money.
While at first you came off as someone trying to help, you really don't come off as bright. Nowhere did I say it would be easy, and I love to see you quote where I did. So basically all you did this whole topic was make assumptions or put words in my mouth.
Haha, I said it would be easier than anywhere else in the world, and my father pays for me... I might as well make up a life story for you and type out things your "said".
Re: So the more I reserach the more I find out it is impossible to move to Jamaica.
Well RP.....I guess if you don't wanna pay the money and go to Jamaica anymore, then this thread is dead huh? From here, all I can see moving forward, is everyone criticizing each other.
Re: So the more I reserach the more I find out it is impossible to move to Jamaica.
very interestin thread.
but it is very hard to move to JA and make a living
but its hard to come to the US to do the same. ..esp if you dont have the complection for the connection.LOL
ask the boatload of cubans chilling in Miami
THEN
go ask the boatload of haitians turned away that the coast gurad will let drown b4 attempting to rescue/lend assistence for fear that they will touch ameican soil.
I do have a freind who bought property in costa rica and ppl who got it going on in the dominican republic..try those places....very pretty places to visit so i hear!

$1,500 just for a work permit is absurd and very disheartening along with the 6month stay rule I am just disgusted.
Really seems it is impossible for an American to move to Jamaica even if I was just looking for a non-flashy very basic one bedroom apartment.
Honestly $1,500 for a work permit is so disgusting it makes me actually hate Jamaica and never want to even visit there...
Anyone ever have success actually moving there with this ridiculous fee? Any ideas on how to counter this would be very appreciate since I really did have my heart set on moving there.
Have you done any research into the reasons for such a steep rate for the Jamaican work permit before being so negative? It is expensive for anyone who wishes migrate to another country. Consider how much more expensive it will be for a Jamaican regardless of age, trying to move to the USA. Provided he complies with all the rules and regulations Jamaicans must comply with before we are even granted a hearing from the US embassy.

Re: So the more I reserach the more I find out it is impossible to move to Jamaica.
Rpalusak,
I think you were treated very wrong in this thread. Im sorry to say alot of you had anasty attitude towards him. People say you can do and achieve anything yet when someone tries you all jump on him an put him down. Not once did anybody try to help him out with a link or something...anyway...RP Jamaica is very beautiful and Im sure you would have a great time there. A job is very very hard to get there as you already know if you dont get to go that way perhaps you can go in spring break or something and explore the island. Research to see if any charity organization etc is going down anytime soon maybe you can join them?
I totally disagree with the idea that he should wait until he can put something into the econemy before he moves there why should he? How many ppl visiting other places do this? Are all the tourists? They are plunging money into the hotels not the ppl. The jobs provided by these places pay such megre wages it is not even worth mentioning...
And for the record to move to the Uk visas for Jamaicans are veeery high and after you pay it they can still turn you down!! Jamaica is just expensive all round.
