Hello :D
My name is Avi, I am 18 years old and looking to get away from all the materialistic people surrounding me. I currently live in Irvine CA and am looking to visit/stay in Jamaica for 6months to a year, I am just looking for some detailed info on how to help me get going there, I have total support from my parents and I am working on saving up. I am really looking on information on housing like where I could stay and how much it might cost kind of thing, like maybe a room for rent type of deal I am NOT looking to stay at a resort, about 3 years ago me and my family came to Jamaica and stayed at FDR in Montego bay and ever since I have been craving to come back but never really had a chance or drive to come back but now that I have graduated high school and am working I am really wanting to come there. So I need to know if there is somewhere I can rent a room or whatever u suggest. I am also curious about some of my possessions like; my laptop that is my main way of contact so I was wondering what I should do about that, like if there is WI-FI for email, also what is the power outlet type there, what are some other possessions u suggest I bring. Transportation is also another factor I am concerned about, how would I be getting around? Maybe a bike or scoter type thing, what about taxis and such. And off course a job I am going to be needing some type of income, are there a lot of options there for a person like me? And are there banks there that can handle all that kind of stuff, again I came for 2 weeks before and was sheltered by the resort so i am total oblivious to all this. Last but not least where would u recommend the best place for me to stay, like what part of Jamaica would fit my needs the best?

Transportation-wise, there are taxis and a bus system. However, that experience is not likely to be the kind you may be used to in the US. Having your own transportation is a definite advantage. Finding employment will not be easy. Firstly, you would have to get a work permit. You would then need to find something that matches your skills. That part isn't going to be easy. For housing, there are options including renting a room, apartment etc. Check the classified ads in the local newspapers for details. For the electronics, whatever works in the US should work here in Jamaica. 110V AC at 50Hz is that standard here. Plugs and sockets are the same as they are in the US. You should know, that Jamaica has it's fair share of materialistic people, just as anywhere else. If you are looking for a more laid back experience, you'd more than likely find that in the rural areas - Portland, St. Thomas, Westmoreland etc. The more rural you go, is the less likely you will find the major facilities (hospitals etc.). My advice to you is to you for your first "adventure" as a young person to Jamaica, is to link up with a group like the Peace Corp, and take an organized "mission" trip to Jamaica. That way, you can focus more on the experience, and less on the logistics. Just a suggestion. Hope it all works out for you.

Re: Hello :D
if you werent so against the idea of a resort you could hook up with me. i'm going in november/december for 6 months. all advice given so far is good. go on the online websites for jamaica gleaner and observer and check the classifieds. approaching someone 'cold' as a foreigner may be harder, people can be wary who they rent to - i would try HS suggestions. are you male or female? white/black? these things can make a difference to your experience. i lived in Sav but was with a jamaican partner so not sure how the experience would have been if i had been alone. i lived in Negril alone but had many people to turn to if things got hairy. i also was very ready to leave materialistic britain. but i actually found Ja to be MORE materialistic in many ways. dont underestimate how stressful the experience can be. trust me - living there is NOT one long holiday in paradise.
