Carrying Large Sum of Money to JA
Hi all, my husband and I are travelling to Jamaica this Christmas. He's from there and I'm Canadian. We will be carrying about 10,000 Canadian dollars cash to Jamaica. Does anyone know if there is paper work we have to fill out before hand, etc.? We can't find any info online and will be calling Jamaican customs tomorrow during the day hours but I was hoping to get some info now. Anyone know??
Thank you!!!!
PS: the money is totally legit, not illegal at all, just savings. (LOL)

No need to worry.
25 minutes before touchdown, you will be handed an Immigartion card as well as a Custom form to complete.
Just indicate the amount that you are travelling with, and you should be all set.

As a safety measure, you may want to convert some of that to Travellers Checks or put some on your credit card or ATM card.

Re: Carrying Large Sum of Money to JA
Ok, the reason we are taking it there, is to put into a Jamaican account, Like Victoria Mutual, to use for a down payment at a future date. If we get some as travellers cheques, will they take them to deposit? I thought it would be difficult to get them cashed when we needed them and we definitely don't want to pay a whole bunch of fees to whatever company cashes travellers cheques. What is your opinion on how to go about this the right way and avoid spending money doing it? It is alot of money to risk getting jacked, that's for sure.

In the US, UK and Canada there are regional branches of Victoria Mutual Building Society designated for that exact purpose.
I googled and found this one in Canada:
Victoria Mutual Building Society
875 Eglinton Avenue West
Unit 14
Toronto, Ontario
M6C 3Z9
You may want to contact them and express your desire to make the deposit prior to leaving.
If not, you can also contact the Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa. They would have the relevant contacts to the Canandian branch of VMBS.
Best of luck.

O, thanks, you're very helpful! We will look into that though I think you have to apply in advance which doesn't leave us with much time. Thanks though, it's something we should have looked into better a long time ago!

10,000 cash!. Not a good idea. You are at the limit of what is allowed by International money laundering agreements/regulations. Do you have a chequing account?. The Victoria Mutual link might help. There is also Jamaica National Building Society (check google).

Re: Carrying Large Sum of Money to JA
I was thinking given the current criminal climate of Jamaica, I would not advise taking that much cash with you anyhow.

Well, even if they had in fact arrived with that sum in cash, as long as they declare it on the Custom form, they would be fine.
The excess would be temporarily confiscated until they can provide proof of its acquisition.
Its just not a safe choice to travel with much liquid cash.
I still recommend that they contact the local VMBS in Canada.

Re: Carrying Large Sum of Money to JA
You can open up an account at Victoria Mutual with less than that and then when you get back home wire the other cash into the account. Ask the bank for wiring instructions. They have a piece of paper with all that you need to do it right.
Customs ask me everytime how much cash I have, maybe because they want to make sure I can stay here the six months. I strongly urge you not to take so much cash with you. If you have an ATM card from your account at home, you can take out cash from there and also deposit it in the account after opening it up.
