Lightbulb Re: Need Advice Moving To Jamaica Next Year

I am from the states, currently residing in Montego Bay for a few mths with my fiance then will return back to the states to work for a few mths, so I'm back & forth. We rent an apt in the St James area which is close to town, beach & nightlife. Since your looking to rent and want to check out the area, when you arrive you should get the local paper..... when you make arrangements to view houses you can make sure the area is cool. I don't know much about the school systems here cause I have no children attending, your husband or his family should be able to give you some advice about that. I don't work while I'm here but you should be able to find employment from the paper or word of mouth.....be prepared for the low wages they pay. To me there is no such thing as a "SAFE" area as you should watch your back where ever you live, even if the area is upscale. Good Luck~

Re: Need Advice Moving To Jamaica Next Year

Hi Sugabee,

I am in the same situation - looking to join hubby early January.
My research has only led me to two areas -

jobs http://www.caribbeanjobs.com
work permits http://jhcuk.org/citizenship.asp#marriage

I too am looking for somewhere to stay- but as hubby is in Kingston and I know how to get around there, this is my first option.

I've just started this and really looking for any good advice to make the move easier.

thanks
Jo

I'm thinking that if you all don't already know this information you shouldn't be moving just yet. RESEARCH ladies. There is a lot of work to be done before such a move. You have to go and find these things out before you pack your bags, and your partners should be helping you.

Re: Need Advice Moving To Jamaica Next Year

For info on rentals in various parishes try www.rentjamaica.com.
As JamCan mentioned, www.splashjamaica.com is great for jobs.

I was going to move to Mo-Bay earlier last year with my friend, but things didn't work out as planned. I found these sites helpful though. Good luck!

Re: Need Advice Moving To Jamaica Next Year

To work in Jamaica, you either have to have:
1. A work permit....last I heard about 1000US and difficult to obtain.
2. Be married to a Jamaican national and go through about 2 months of red tape. I think it is shorter now.

Customer service is sloooooooooooow, so anything you need to do multiply the time.

Minimum wage here is about 50US a week. And most jobs are minimum wage.

For all the jobs advertised, you will notice that the salaries are not listed. Do not expect too much.

.

I know this is an old post but just wanted to add.......it doesn't take 2 mths to get a work permit exemption by virtue of marriage..it takes a few hours in Kingston and a bit of paperwork and you have to return in a week to pick up your stamped passport. It's a very very easy process..much easier than what you read on the Ministry's website.

But, how long does it then take you to find a job?

Job?! You mean like actually work for a living? on that! LOL Dh owns his own business so I don't really 'work'.

Jamcan...as long as you've been married for 30 days you can get the exemption. Anyone who's married to a J'can should do this.. that way there is no hassle with traveling back and forth..you can come and go as you please.
