Jamcan...as long as you've been married for 30 days you can get the exemption. Anyone who's married to a J'can should do this.. that way there is no hassle with traveling back and forth..you can come and go as you please.
Guess I could just go the married way then. I have only one connection and I don't really want to cook.

Like I said..the process is rather easy..at least it was for me. Next step is citizenship which may be a bit longer and more difficult but we'll see.

There's jobs out there to be had and from I understand it's not hard to find one and the connections I was talking about was having a friend in HR at the resorts or hotels or a friend in the bank......there are good paying jobs here as well as low paying...it's just up to you to find the right one for you.

Don't bother with security..they only earn $4200K a week.

It's really not an issue right now. Not thinking of moving there.

Will keep it in the back of my mind though.

I have to say, Irie, I don't recall seeing many Americans working anywhere in Jamaica, though.

LOL Then you're not looking in the right places. I don't mean that in a harsh way at all..but they are here and they are working in many different fields. I guess it all depends on where you are and where you go. I know that ones that come to retire aren't working and the ones that come with families do work either for themselves or for a large company such as The Ritz or Pihl and any of the other large companies around here and get their work permits thru the employer but have a time limit they can stay.

From what I understand, and I could be wrong, so please don't quote me..it's hard for a non J'can to just come down here and decide " Hey..I'm not leaving! I'm gonna set up home here and work or start a business." I'ts a pain in the ass getting a bank account even if you are J'can and it's worse for a non J'can. It's just alot easier if you're married to J'can or your parents or one parent is J'can. My kids will have their J'can citizenship before me because of their dad.

PS: Or they could be like me and doing everything possible to avoid work so they can sit on the beach and work on their tan! I'm glad tommorow is a holiday...I will be beaching it all day.

Re: Need Advice Moving To Jamaica Next Year

Jomos girl- I have been and come back and as you say Irie Star - getting the work permit takes literally a week, but if you want to work in a specialised field - in my experience the jobs are much harder to come by, as employers can be put off by salary expectations .

That said, I will be going back late in the year but planning to line up a work from instead.

Any other tips or suggestions, again are most welcome.

Re: Need Advice Moving To Jamaica Next Year

If you are going to work in Jamaica, you will need to adjust your salary expectations. Jamaica's economy is very different from those of North America and Europe. Unless you are one of the fortunate ones who have some rare specialized skill which a company that can afford to pay what is paid in other countries, needs, you will likely find that the compensation you may be used to, or expect in your home country, will not be possible in Jamaica.

<sigh>I can just imagine what it would be like if I got paid at the same rate which people like me get paid in the US or the UK. </sigh>

It's a very very easy process..much easier than what you read on the Ministry's website.
Yes it is very quick to obtain work permit and residency when you are married to a Jamaican citizen. However 2 months isnt really long at all, so either way a win win situation.

Many American work in Jamaica. Depends on where you spend your time in JA but most will not be working in the hotels for $50/hr. Many Americans actually are able to obtain good jobs in a corprate setting due to the education they may posses. So Kingston and Mobay are big hubs, but the jobs are not in places you would see as a tourist.

I find this interesting cause I have seen the people from India, From Barbados, I know someone from Germany, etc.

And you are assuming I have been no where but tourist areas. Track NYCgirl and see what she recently said about assuming.

Well there are people from all over really that come but it all depends on your education level and experience. Getting a job in Jamaica is not a piece of cake and I guess many Americans choose to live a decent life in the US versus starting over again in Jamaica.

That would be one reason I would not consider it.

oh, i was not meaning to sound like I am assuming. Just making a general statement for those who are not from Jamaica who may not know about all the ins and outs and the workforce that actually exists under the radar.

i found that out first hand SP. for all my education and experience there just arent the jobs there to apply for unless you already have links to some foreign company or sumthing.
