UK guy looking for advice?
Hi all,
I'm a UK citizen dating a Mo Bay girl here in the UK. She has dreams of moving back to Ja pretty soon and I would like to follow her, marry her and live permanently on your island. In my experience mixed couples are pretty well tolerated here and I have never encountered any real problems. Is that situation likely to continue in Jamaica? All and any other advice on day to day living in Ja would be greatly appreciated. |

I am having a similiar experience. I was born in london to Jamaican parents and now live in the U.S. with my white American girlfriend. We plan to move to Westmoreland (Hopefully Negril).
We have been to Jamaica together a few times, and I have countless times before we met. In our experience, we were pretty well treated. Even out "inna bush" people were very very cool. Steve |

Should your "inna bush" people be any less friendly? Are you implying that since they are so deep "inna di bush", they have never seen a White person, or a 'mixed" couple before?

Re: UK guy looking for advice?
It can be challenging in JA if you are farrin.....but I find in Kingston its sooo diverse peeps dont seem to look twice at a white gyal there...lololol I think you will be just fine ....if your a nice person....you will be treated that way....mostly people treat you the way you treat them...there are some prejudices to people fram farrin there but no more than any where else in the world.....

Re: UK guy looking for advice?
I live in Negril, currently in the US until next month. I am in a similar relationship with a Rasta and have been for 3 years. At first people openly called him "Rent-a-dread" and really upset him. I told him not to worry, that we know in our hearts what we have. It is calmer now, but we get lots of stares due to the fact of the tourists and the rent-a-dread situations. The neighborhood we live in have very friendly people and accept our relationship. So even though you may experience some problems, I think everything's going to be alright for you and your girlfriend. Please contact me when you come over to Jamaica. Ted and I would love to meet you and talk.

Re: UK guy looking for advice?
I think he just means its less common to see a 'whitey' than around the tourist resorts. 'Inna di bush' I still turn heads and have people calling to me, but I have rarely experienced negativity, its simple curiosity. I understand it as in parts of the north east england where Im from, black people still turn heads as its a predominantly white area.

Re: UK guy looking for advice?
Im a UK citizen in Westmoreland too and would be happy to meet up with you when you come over, or help if you need any advice. My best advice would be to not even hesitate - just make the move and come over. Im back in UK now for month or 2 as I dont have citizenship yet and being here again is the best inspiration I need for living in Jamaica. England sucks!

Re: UK guy looking for advice?
Thanks LadySizzla. Not too sure when we'll make it to Ja, maybe sometime next year, a lot depends upon my work here in the UK and also that of my partner. But you can be sure I'll give ya a shout when we do arrive.
