Talking Moving to JM_Seeking teaching position

Like I responded to Forgien...I am still in the planning phase of moving to JM, however; my biggest concern is employment. I have a home in Fl. and I dont want to give it up. I am seeking a Language Arts (grades 9-12) teaching position (Special Education). I will have completed my dissertation by next year Ed.D in Organization/Education Leadership. Any advice on the education pay there. I have a daughter, her brother and father are already there. We are looking to purchase a home. We would rather build than buy...but we reallly dont want to stay with relatives. My goal was to secure a job prior to moving, but the only accesse to employment information that I have is online. I will be there in July, but the schools will be closed, so I believe it will be difficult for me to search for employment then. Any advice or directions are greatly appreciated. My plan was to move there within the next 3 years, but if I could get there by summer next year....that would do my and my daughters heart good. I am looking for a school of performing and creative arts for my daughter to attend...If anyone has information please send.

I believe that you will find employment as long as you have a skill/training. the biggest problem in my mind is the poooor service that most if not all businesses have there. They treat there customers as if the customer is not paying for the service that they expect to have.

I too would like to return, but with the lousy service and the lack of completion as far as land line is concern, I am hesitant, I have a home business, and I need a working land line, that provides me with a resonable flat rate to make unlimited calls a broad and localy. People say it's the crime that make Jamaica as bad as it is, I have another reason, it's the poor attitude of most Jamaicans at home, including the business community and the greedy and selfish politicians. Have anyone notice how big and fat these guys are? Don't they know that if workers on the bottom end are better paid, the country will prosper, and if the country prosper they will prosper ever more? The more money you earn, the more you spend, and the vast majority of spenders are not business people...so it's the people at the top that is mosly holding the country back.

Re: Moving to JM_Seeking teaching position

Well I can tell you that I have done a small amount of research on teaching jobs in JA and Teachers make not even close to enough money to live on in JA and the best thing to do is consider working for some place like the American international school which has locations in Kingston and also Mandeville, the pay is better.

and that won't change, I agree with your suggestion HT. JAmaica is my home but things really look down hill. I am sorry for my kids and those that follow so to speak because I wasn't privilege to much but had to work hard and still working hard to survive. Can you imagine an sector where all the qualified teachers emigrate for good?

Jamaica's gov't have their priorities all wrong, they don't place enough emphasis on Teachers, doctors, nurses, firemen, police, small businesses, the total opposite in first world countries.

Don't come back ya fi live and teach unless you just spending a few summers teaching unfortunate kids or underprivileged kids, but fly back home to your life's securities.

Re: Moving to JM_Seeking teaching position

Well I understand if you can qualify to be a principal that the pay is more like something you can live on, but have not researched enough to find out what In Jamaica are the qualifications yet. If you plan to work as a teacher, plan to do that and something else also. I have visited some Jamaican schools on my trips and corresponded with some teachers from there. They work just as hard as I do. They are doing amazing things with little to no resources, and they are paid less than some people I know who are Bartenders. Its a shame really. Just like everywhere else in the world the priveleged get the best education. There are private schools that you can find The wealthy Jamaicans and foreign people send their children to. These institiutions offer better teaching salaries, but its extremely difficult to get hired there.

Re: Moving to JM_Seeking teaching position

I know a principal in Ja who makes $24,000 JA a month. I can just imagine what the teachers in her school receive as a salary.

thanks for the advice, but here in AM, the teacher pay is not that good either especially for a teacher with a family.

I was not aware that there were summer teaching programs...perhaps that is an option. I guess my main concern is that my fiance' is there and me and daughter are here, I just really want to get back

well that is the real reason then. I understand that feeling to be seperated and you wanting to move back and since you are a teacher then you can come to JA and resume your career, whilst contributing financially to your family no matter how small the remuneration. Well I wish you every success in your endeavours.
