JC,
On the contrary.
Telling a young vibrant person with unlimited potentials to walk away from visible opportunities in search of less opportune circumstance is plain wrong IN MY OPINION.
Its not about the almighty dollar, its about attainingthe highest educational level possible so as to empower yourself in the future.
I have an daughter of 18 years old, and there is no way i would encourage her to go back to Jamaica to study. not because the colleges are no good but because of liimited opportunities.
You guys know only tof he romance and splendors of Jamaica.
Let me hear the voices of the Jamaicans IN JAMAICA, who would agree with you that she should walk away from the educational opportunities in the States to come back to Jamaica.
My friend (the one you know) is a Scientific and Medical Supplies contractor to over 300 schools in Jamaica (including the one mentioned). I wont begin to discredit it, but I had a first-hand view of the current infrastructure of that institution.
Do you know how many jamaicans would give a kidney to be in her position?
No. its not about the almighty dollar...Its about being the best that you can be...and only then..being empowered, she can return home and be a positive contribution.

Jamaica is filled with millions of "smart gyals" and guys right now...scrambling to "make it."
This isnt New York we are talking about.
Opportunities dont hit you upside the head while walking down the street.

Re: Future in Jamaica
Well we'll see where her decisions take her. Of course, we all have our own opinions, and what makes us "tick" is different for everyone. Some people can find contentment in other ways.

You could always go on the Jamcan and herself thread and just talk to yourself.

Re: Future in Jamaica
I know what she is searching for, JC and I truly do wish her the best and hope she finds what she is looking for. I wish that for everyone. I just agree with Alex that the opportunities are just not there. If you do your research and really look around when you are there, you will see that.

I'm not totally blind to everything but resorts in Jamaica. I have eyes and can see, I know enough people's stories there to understand what you people are saying. But there isn't only ONE side to the coin.

I may be wrong about SF; but all I see from her thread is an intelligent, young lady who is torn between her love/longing of country and the heartfelt grief of being away from her loved ones; versus her need to be empowered by gaining a worthwhile education.
Without a doubt, she is smart enough to recognize that there is some degree of disparity between the opportunities here in the States and backhome; hence the fielding of opinions from us and her close family members.
I think we would be doing her a dis-service by embracing the emotional aspect that she portrays and ignoring simple common sense.
Yes, she is a smart young lady, ambitious and positive to the bone..But with all due disrespect a teenager (assumingly) just the same.
At that age, all it takes is one broken heart to change their perspective of the world.
"Good" advice at this stage should be "solid" advice.

I think you hit the nail on the head..........how many times have any of us let emotion lead our decisions as opposed to REALLY thinking them out?

I agree.
Decisions of the heart over the head (in my experience) are often wrong.
I always believed that you cant save someone from making EVERY mistake but you certainly can help them in not making the same ones that you have in the past.
She will have many more of her own to make in the interim.

Well JC.
She WILL make her own decision in the end, but whatever it is, I hope that it will offer her the very best of all possibilities.

Re: Future in Jamaica
In the end, that's all it is......when you are searching for opinions, you are going to get differing ones. That's the whole point of opening up. You have the final say on what you decide to do.
I don't see what it hurts to really think through all options before making a decision.
