Hello, ..I'm glad I've found this site, hope to make friedns and learn about Jamaica here..

I'm Ukrainian currently completing my Master Degree in Canada, and my long-time desire is to live in the Carribeans for a while.. Certainly not as a tourist,..I'm no fan of going to Disney Lands..which is what you get staying in a hotel for a fortnight with no genuine contact with the place that surrounds you. Where ever I go, I seek to feel the spirit of the land, to gain a deeper appreciation of the people, culture..

I'd be thankfull if you guys could orient me a bit on the cost of living in Jamaica. Will I get a decent flat to rent for, say, USD$200-250 per month. What sort of money would a middle-income Jamaican spend on food monthly. How prices vary across the island.

I'm in Ottawa downtown. Likely the most boring place on Earth. But I came here to study, not to carnival, anyway.

Im not far from you, about 2 hours south along Lake Ontario. It depends on what area you want to live in. Rent can range from $5000JA - upwards sky is the limit! $5000JA is literally a room in the country, if you know the area can you can look online at www.jamaicagleaner.com to get some idea.
Food varies also, using the local markets help alot in cost. Cant really pin point that, I do know cost has gone up alot there recently. Will you have a job or be living from savings?

thank you folks... I would love to work in Jamaica, but have little hopes of finding a job there. I have Master's in COnflict Studies, and so far couldn't find a relevant job here in Canada (though I sought only for a month).
Jam, we won't see each other in Canada, for I shall be leaving soon, but we might meet in The Place.
