Re: I have to move to JA
Well I found this really useful thread about moving to JA i thought I would post a link http://www.everytingjamaican.com/jam...ad.php?t=11703
Because this thread was so filled with JA bashing that it might be helpful for someone who actually wants some positive feedback, instead of discouragement |

Re: I have to move to JA
HT -- I'm personally impressed that you know that you don't want to live the rest of your life in the US and have a plan to make things happen for yourself. I think that no matter where you go, you'll do just fine. For what it's worth, life isn't "simple" here in the US. We all have issues and things to deal with on a daily basis. I'm not saying it's "easier" in JA, but if that's where your heart is . . . then you'll do what you need to do to make it work! Keep me posted with your plans.

Re: I have to move to JA
yeah lillywhite, I know life will always have ups and downs where ever you go, but it is possible to be in a place where life is just a lot less complicated.and a lot warmer, and more beautiful.

Re: I have to move to JA
On the topic of this thread, I know I'll probably end up in JA one day too. But I'll go when the time is right for family and myself. I'm not gonna sit here and wait for the day my son is outta my hair or something stupid like that. Anyways, there's not much of a living there so I'd have to go on my own avails. I'll just leave it a vacation spot until its logical to be there.
My job is so great thought...they have a program where you can specify any amount you want taken off your check every 2 weeks. They'll bank it for you specifically for a leave of absence. So when you wanna travel for 6 months they'll still pay you like regular out of that money. So its a prepaid leave of absence. My boss has done it and swears by it....he goes to Australia for a few months ever couple years.

My plans too. I would like to own a bed and breakfast in Lucea, MoBay or Negril. For now, I can't even think about it because of my daughters. By the time they've moved out and gotten settled, I wonder if I'll still wanna do it.

Re: I have to move to JA
I'm waiting for my youngest to finish high school and maybe a year or two of college if he needs my support, but right after graduation if he is comfortable with being totally independent and coming to visit his mother during summer breaks as she lives in Jamaica. Got my daughter in college....now about four to six years for my son, and then Jamaica for good here I come.

Rent in JA varies so much and depends where you live. We lived in the hills, had a nice large 1 bedroom house, running water, new windows, grilled all around, gated etc we paid equivelent of $150 CDN a month - (our friend lives in it now and he stills pays that same amount). That same size home along the coast runs for 5 times that amount. We, like JAmiss stated in the link HT gave, eat frugally even here in Canada. Mainly chicken and rice, so we spent approximately $1000JA a week on food - staples like rice, flour, sugar, spices, some veg (we had a garden so grew some of our veg). Meat tends to be on the more expensive side, so chicken is the most reasonable.(which we bought once a month and put in the freezer) I just looked at some of our old bills and at that time we were paying $7-8000JA a month on electricity ( we had 3 lights, and fridge that ran from current) - that has since gone up dramatically. I love JA really do and yes would also like to live there, but like I stated before only part of the year - WINTER!!!! Rupert also agrees with me as we talked about this just last night - moving back full time he would never do, moving part of the year - yes always an option and most likely the way we will go. ![]()
