Re: I have to move to JA

This is a really interesting thread.
I moved back to Ja. almost 9 years ago. I left in my early teens and lived in Canada. In moving back, I was looking for a little bit of the Jamaican that I left in the early '70s. I thought I knew what I was moving back to. What really caught me off guard (and my cousin who had left when she was 11) was the culture shock.
The first year was excruciatingly difficult and I think I only stuck it out because I could hear all my friends saying, "yeah, yeah, we knew you'd come back."
Even if you were born Jamaican, when you live away for a while and come back, people treat you like a "foreigner".
You really have to open up your mind a lot and let go of a lot of things/expectations to survive emotionally.
Living here is a dilemma. It's good and bad; bitter and sweet; ugly and beautiful all at the same time. It can be great, but it can be heart breaking.

However, I believe, as in anywhere else in the world, if you have a strong "community"/support system then it can work. If not, it can be empty and painful.

Honestly.

I have only lived there for over a quarter of a century. Whatthe hell do I know about Jamaican life?
Damswell, you have only lived there for a couple of years and married a jamaican.
What the hell do you and Rup know about life down there?

And JG...Well, You didn't even try pulling up your tent and moving there so, whadda you know? should I go on?

The point is ppl, stop being haters. Ppl moving to Jmaica have done their research. They know whats up.So freakin sarcastic

Lets stop casting jamaica in a bad light.Seems like lately yall have a lot of Negative things to say about JA

The time we took to do that would be better served doing our own research and making plans to return indefinately.

Its all good.

I'm out.
Have a WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING YOU'ALL
I am not just some foolish bimbo lookin to throw eveything away cause my hormones are raging. I am well educated. I have More education than you may be aware of, have common sense, I am fiscally responsible and maybe I am not as Jaded as you and your posse, i still see the positive side of life in Jamaica, i am sad for you guys that you are so down on it. Used it for what you wanted and now seem to just wanna bad mouth the place...I know there is hardship in that country I would have to live under a rock not to..... I have seen it first hand. I also know there are people who love living in Jamaica, who are not starving and who have been to America with all of its wealth and privilege and still love their country more. Folks who have chosen to go back to Jamaica cause that is their home, and try to make a diference there instead of forsasking it. I spoke in my posts about a perfectly rational plan to take my time, be sure about my relationship, and prepare financially for my possible move. Yet you still feel the need to tell me to do all those things, as if I didn't say them already. That is why I began to sound agitated, nothing is more frustrating than not being heard. So Alex take your sharp sarcastic tongue and use it to eat some Turkey or something.

You need to visit more houses and towns and see how they really live. You need to wake up hungry and try and figure out what you are going to go catch or pick for breakfast cause there is no money for food that day. You need to do all your chores early cause there is not light in the house after dark, no money to pay the light bill right now. You need to bathe by the standpipe. You need to see his son staying home day after day cause there is no money to send him in a taxi or pay for lunch at school this week. You need to see him come home from work dog tired and complaining how he is treated, day after day and then see his small paycheck each week. You need to try and get around to where you are going all the time by taxi and find their schedules are not as convenient as you would like.........that you hate waiting till 6 a.m. for them to start running again so you can finally go home from a night out and they are either full or nowhere to be found when you need one. You need to surive the intense heat, the flies, the mosquitos, tropical storms and hurricanes. You need to have to seek medical care in JA and find privacy is a thing of the past. You need to really look at how much things cost in JA. I could go on and on,you know.

If Jomo hadn't gotten a visa and green card, I would've dropped everything to be with him wherever he was. That being said, I have seen so much of JA........from the ghetto to some of the upper class housing to way up in the hills. I've stayed in the resorts and in yard. How something so beautiful can be so harsh sometimes is beyond me. It is beautiful and heartbreaking all at once. Swell can tell you even better then me as she lived there for years.

Life is hard in JA, Teach. Please think about what your are wanting to do after you have seen more then a few days of JA. And, MAKE SURE he is worth all this planning you are doing.
JG I know that this kind of life exists in Jamaica. I do understand it, but not everyone in Jamaica lives this way. I am not going to drop everything to go be with my man. I actually have a very caclulated plan for moving that I had long before i met D. There are things I don't post on ETJ parts of my life and sides to me no one ever sees on here. I am not just a sex crazed schoolteacher.....lookin to get her groove back. I have known for many years that i will not live out the rest of my life in this country. I have always hated the American way of life the grind, the way everyone is so driven by material possessions. Have put a lot of effort into figuring out where i would go and how I would live....this is not about a man, this is about my own life plan. If D is a part of it great but he is not the motivation for it. I am a strong and independent woman and feel the need to make it clear I am not chasing a man, I am following my own personal goals. Neither of my trip reports included details surrounding this, the property I looked at the houses I priced, among other things.....which i choose not to post about. but rest assured That I will be ok where ever I end up. I will not go into anything lightly.

I think all of this is crazy!!!! Leave her alone!!! She gotta do what she gotta do, you all doubt her in investigating what she might get into? Instead of bringing down peoples dreams and inspirations you guys should be supporting her instead of attacking her with negative arguements!!! Thats what friends are for... yeah reality is out there but I figure she is WELL aware of what she is doing... she's a grown @ss sk@nk.. uhm I mean woman .. I am dissapointed at the answers and I am gonna keep reading!!!

Thanks GG, I love Jamaica, love the time I spent there, looking forward to my 4 weeks there again in 30 days, BUT I do know it was also the hardest years of my life. I left a great job, good money, etc.

Would I change it, NO. I learned to appreciate the smallest things, like constant electricity and hot water!!!!!

I am always the first to tell someone - experience JA for what it really is not the tourist way for an extended period of time if possible. Then make your decisions.

You will be glad you did. and HT - I did read your post and initially I thought you were jumping the gun, but I saw that your plan was still a long way away, plenty of time to experience life in JA for longer periods of time than just 1-2 weeks.
