Teaching Opportunities

Hello Everyone,
I too am Jamaican dreaming. My dream is to teach in Jamaica. I would like to teach on the west, south, north sides or interior of Jamaica. I think I could teach certain subjects to children under age 18 and I have a Master's degree which would make me eligible to teach certain subjecrts in a college setting. The trouble I am having is getting addresses for schools and universities. Can anyone assist me with that? Thanks and Bright Blessings to all. Tia

Re: Teaching Opportunities

hi tiamat. are you currently teaching somewhere? i'm an elementary school teacher. i am also interested in the jamaican school system. the thought of teaching there has crossed my mind as well. the next time i visit i am going to check into the school system/university to see how it operates and how well-equipped it is. i wonder how feasible it is for a foreigner to teach there. have you ever considered teaching for missions work? by doing it that way you may be able to feel it out and see if it's something you'd like to do long term. i was thinking about teaching as a missionary in africa but that was before i experienced jamaica and adopted a toddler. best of luck to you. i'll be sure to share any information i get. lata, tia (the other one lol)

Re: Teaching Opportunities

Hi Tia!!! I currently teach in a dual diagnose treatment facility. I teach vocational and wellness classes. I have taught Women's Studies to college freshmen and sophomores also. As for as who Jamaic accepts as teachers I am just attempting to explore that. I would like to find out the credentials needed. Where do you teach? or what? Best Wishes

Hi--You can get a listing of public and private schools from the Jamaican Embassy...if you send them an email they will get back to you very quickly. Good Luck! Peace

Re: Teaching Opportunities

tiamat i have a BS in early childhood education and a master in elementary education. i have been a third grade teacher for 5 years. i love teaching in a school corporation but my passion is really working with very young children. my long term goal (dream) is to open a high quality early childhood center that offers subsidized assistance to families who don't qualify for TANF/AFDC but don't make enough money to pay for a program like that. it would be very similar to the head start program. i don't see myself doing that in the very near future...maybe 10+ years down the road.

what is a dual diagnose facility?

Re: Teaching Opportunities

Am getting my teaching certificate next year...I have a BA in English Language and Literature and an MA in Special Education. My boyfriend wants to move back to Jamaica in a couple of years and if all is well am thinking of going with him. I was wondering too how feasible it would be for me to get a job as a foreigner.

Re: Teaching Opportunities

Saphyre don't worry about how feasible it is. I'm moving down next summer and I'm definitely a foreigner. I've got all kinds of friends down there (Jamaicans) who have assured me that I have nothing to worry about. I can get a job, my son can go to school and we can live in a decent home.
I also have a good friend who's white, Canadian. Her man lives in Kingston (in the ghetto) and she's lived down there 6 months at a time. She's always able to work or volunteer and just hang. She's leaving again in June indefinitely and isn't worried at all about working.

Thumbs up Re: Teaching Opportunities

Hi I also do teaching and my nickname is TIa and I am Jamaican. I suggest you go online and research the education system in JA. I also suggest you contact the board of Edu in JA, I did. This will aid you in finding out the job openings and in depth details on teaching in Ja and whatsoever credentials you may need. I wish you all the best.

In life one of my motto is :"Either you gonna learn or teach...you choose?" Peace.

Re: Teaching Opportunities

Hey Princessblack and Tia,
We three Tias have quite a bit in common. Thanks Princessblack for the advice. Do you have a handy website for the Board of Education? I only have access to a computer while at work so my surfing time is limited. If you are too busy that's ok.
Tiamat is the name for the mother of all dragons. Perhaps we are are all dragons.
Tia I am envious of your trip. If you meet a guy named Mr. Cool tell him hello please. Have a magical time in Paradise. Love to hear about your adventures upon yoiur return.
Princess, do you currently teach in Ja? What grades do you teach? My goal is to return late spring, early summer of 2005 and look for a teaching position. What do you think of that plan? Is it feasable to do it that way?
All respect and blessings to each of you and to you too JamCam. Lynn
