Re: Teaching Opportunities
tiamat that was very sweet of you. i had a wonderful time back in april and i'm hoping to return in july. yeah i know it's only been 3 mos but i just can't stay away. as for your plan about returning next year to find a job...i suggest you get a few contacts with prospective employers instead of going in blind. ideally, i'd like a 1 or 2 year contract as a "trial period" to see if i can support myself and my son. i've checked with the peace corps and they won't accept anyone with dependent children. the next thing i found is a site called joyjobs.com. it's a very intensive site and it requires a registration fee so i'm not into that either. they offer jobs worldwide though...it seemed interesting. so now i'm back to the drawing board. the ministry of ed seems like a good link. thanks for posting it missb.

Re: Teaching Opportunities
No problem tia! I know the entire task of relocating is daunting! I just hope you all will keep me informed so that if I decide to do it...I'll have your trailblazin' to help me!!
I'd suggest you start with the JTA as a contact. They should be a huge resource in terms of helping you get started! ![]() |

Re: Teaching Opportunities
Greetings to all!
I just returned from JA yesterday. I am working in the Blue Mountains to start an NGO called the Blue Mountain Project to open up a Health Clinic. If anyone would like to learn more about the project, I'd be happy to tell ![]() Anyway, check this site for more info on the Education system. JA is very open to foreign educators, but keep in mind that there is very little money to be made. My best girl friend is a teacher in JA and makes about US$141 or J$8,500 per month and on top of that has to purchase any school supplies out of her salary. The only other benefit she gets is a free lunch. However, her expenses are somewhat low...rent is about US$50 per month, groceries about US$10 per week. She has shared utilities and all the mango, banana, apple, and plaintin she can pick! http://www.moec.gov.jm/ Likkle More, Denise |

Re: Teaching Opportunities
denise, what part of jamaica does your friend teach? i'm surprised to find that she only gets $141US as a monthly salary when i have friends who work as hotel staffers for $200US a month. all you can eat mango, apple, and plantain is a nice perk though. lol
do tell us more about your health clinic project. that sounds very interesting. i was wanting to do some humanitarian volunteer projects and checked into the peace corps but i learned that they won't accept anyone with dependent children. i'm a single mom and won't leave my lil man behind. your post was very informative, thanks for sharing it with us! |

Re: Teaching Opportunities
Important questions need answering please...
1. What is the job market like for teachers in the area of special ed in the US? 2. What is a prestigious college/university in the US and FL that teaching is highly recognised? 3. What do you think is better to teach, special ed, elementary school or secondary? 4. I was told that to be a teacher you have to have no felonies or bad credit, how true? 5. How rewarding is teaching? 6. How is the course work , easy, medium, hard, when studying education in university? Thanks. |

Easier to get a job if you are special ed. Or if you teach secondary Science or math. They do a criminal background check on all teachers and this is to check for felony convictions. Felons can't be teachers...something we don't know about you PB??? LOL The course work is not too hard and it can be fun if you are in the right kind of classes. The teaching job itself is very rewarding super challenging but the rewards are worth it to me any way!!! |

Re: Teaching Opportunities
I'm happy that i found this thread cause if i end up living in Jamaica for a while, i thought about teaching. Im a certified teacher of english as a second language for adults, and i know there's a lot of non-english speakers moving to Ja. Anyone know about possibilities in this field?

Re: Teaching Opportunities
Holy crap....just did all the research about getting a work permit in jamaica......and I decided its best to find a vulnerable young Jamaican man and trick him into marrying me so I can get a green card....lololololol
Just kidding.......but I have heard that there are some private schools that have better teaching salaries.......than others......and like everything else in Jamaica its really comes down to who you have a connection with.... |
