Unless, am mistaken, dat movie must be Country Man (I think...).

Dance Hall Queen: If you loved Audrey Reid in DHQ, then you will LOVE her in Higgler. It will make you roll with laughter!

Bwaaay Jomo, yu lucky Iyah!

Anyway, on a more serious note.
Without saying too much, I have seen and personally known too many Jamaican Fantazy turned into nightmare, to not step up to the plate and give my 2-cents.

First Point: I (personally) have NEVER heard of anyone coming to the States, legally stable (i,e, SSN, Work Permit, etc), and decided to go back home because life in the States was too hard and they couldn't find a job.

TRUE: Many Jamaicans back home have very good jobs with financial stability to ensure long-term prosperity for himself andf his own.
And also TRUE that a few women (sometimes Men) go to Jamaica, fall in love with the island and a man and is capable of sustaining themselves for a significant period.

But it is also EQUALLY TRUE that Many,Many women go to Jamaica, fall in love, decide to stay down there with their Jamaican Loved-one; only to find out later that the loved one does not wish to stay there, but in fact wishes to come to the States, UK or Canada for a better life.

The Jamaican man has a pride not normally seen elsewhere, which motivates him to want to BE ALL and DO ALL for his woman. Most of us grew up (in Jamaica) in a society where the man supports the family. In order to fulfill this objective he has to have the financial stability to do this. One that may or may not be achievable in Jamaica.

While the "foreign" woman (being more emotionally endowed) may find it romantically satisfying to just live on the island in a little "one-room" with the bare necessities, walking on the beach, hand in hand with the man of her dreams and living off the bare essentials, the Jamaican man wants to know (First and foremost) that there is food on the table and that his woman is "all set".
No matter how we dice it, The US (UK and Canada) has a MUCH better quality of life than Jamaica.

I ask this question once again: Why do you tink so many of us (Jamaicans) are here living in this Ice-Box?

If anyone wishes to move to Jamiaca without making some SERIOUS plans and careful consideration, putting Love first and foremost, I wish you all the best. But I beg of you: put a little "sumptin'" away fi di rainy day.

We have a little saying back home: "No Money. No Love".

All the best, to the rest.

-Alex93
I dont disagree with you at all in terms of making the plans for sure. You have to know what your getting into because its not just a vacation.
I guess I am jaded as coming from NY I have seen so many island people come here and struggle day in and day out. Just because we have it here doesnt mean people have access to it and that to me is worse then it just not being there.
When I was at Sumfest I listed to the artist talk about the life they had. I forget who it was I think it was Cham who talked about not having anything but porridge to eat. I have seen where people live in a one room place with no bathroom, no hot water washing clothes by hand, bathing in the river. That cant be a good life. And I grew up in hardhsip but not like that. It makes me sad.
But I just met someone who moved back to JA from the states to live a life that may not be easier but more satifiying. Said she hasnt been happier.
Also what you say about JA men is sooo true!!!!!!!!! Completely. Thats the situation I am in right now. If I come to JA it has to be where everything in set financially no matter how much we love and miss each other. I guess hes the smart one as I might be in JA based on love!!! But I am making a plan for sure!!!

Re: having second thoughts

People need to be careful not to mistake island romance for love and the only reason to change one's life - like summer camp crushes, it doesn't always last. Love is work if its real love - coz you have to work to sustain it and work together to make it last for real.

I know its been said a thousand times before - but many people in difficult situations where the future does not seem bright will see a relationship as a means to and end ... even if they are sincere in their affection they may not be straight (even with themselves) about their motives.

I am one of those on this site who says I want to move to JA -- and I do! I am not involved with a man there and at the moment see myelf in MY little house with MY little kitchen garden, going to the market by MYself on MY little scooter. But even that 'romance' i know will take planning, soul searching and work to sustain it and make it work for real.

So all good advice from all the posters on this one. And happy thoughts to those who have found true love with an islander or island lifestyle and made it work for real! THAT'S irie for true!

Re: having second thoughts

oh! Alex thanks for the movie list! but i disagree with you about some of the old movies and (sorry) thought Third World Cop was not great. OK i am old school here but Rockers is better - and I think that is the one that you all are thinking of with the scooter business.

Breadfruit,
I salute you to the max!

I have not read such an eloquent piece in a long time.

These statements would be true if you fell in love with the guy down the street as well.

Breadfruit,
You really ARE old school.
But Rockers (featuring Bunny Wailer, Jacob Miller, Burning Spear, etc) can not be compared with 3rd World Cop. Even though they are both Jamaican originals they are two totally different genre.
Rockers was a reggaerized rendition of jamaican life.

You would have had to be living in the environment such as seen in TWC to fully understand and appreciate it. Otherwise, its hard to relate (no disrespect).

You see, my own life (in growing up) was almost identical to Capone's (the lead character in TWC).

If you met me in person (and without giving too much away)..you'd never believe..I was born in the ghetto (a place called Trench Town, Kingston 13).
I grew up "bare-foot", torn clothes, playing (foot)ball in the streets similar to as dipicted in the movie.
I grew up in a "tenement" yard with many ppl sharing the same outhouse and using one "stand-pipe". I grew up having one pair of "school clothes", one pair of socks and one pair shoes; that I HAD to take off as soon as I got home from school.

Like Capone I lost young friends to the bullet, and I too, made a choice and "got out".
Last but not least, I too had to return to face (some of) my old friends on the opposite side of the law.

So, I'm sure that you can appreciate why 3rd World Cop has a special appeal to me or anyone else who knows what its like riding on the back of a J.O.S. bus from Half Way Tree to Maxfield Avenue because we didnt hve the fare to pay.

Mi naw tel yu nuttin more
Peace.

Re: having second thoughts

I understand why you hold a special place for that movie now, and seeing first hand the area you grew up in I applaud you for "going the other way".

I have been thru Trench Town to go to Kingston General Hospital, and have seen the conditions people live in.

My hat off to you.
