Re: having second thoughts
Alex, I absolutely adore you. Do you know that? You speak real without cutting people down, exactly as I like it. And we seem to be in perfect agreement lately.
That is what I am trying to get across. It is hard to live in Jamaica. Poverty is rampant. And, even if you/he does have a job, how good is that job? Jomo had a good job; but it was dependent on the tourist trade (busy season much more prosperous then off season) and the whims of his terrible manager. Money is an issue whether we like it or not. And, I cannot say this enough..........to get your significant other to the states, whether fiance or husband, you have to have enough income to support them here. So, you will have to leave Jamaica and come back, get yourself re-established-find a job, prove income for months, etc., and then apply, no matter what you have done previously. You will be without that person for a long period of time again. If that is your final intention, for them to come to the US, you are not helping yourself by running off to JA for however long. You are only hurting yourself in the long run.

Re: having second thoughts
Jomo's Girl.
T'anks again for the compliment. It seems that we are the minority in this respect. Bwaaay Jomo, yu lucky Iyah! Anyway, on a more serious note. Without saying too much, I have seen and personally known too many Jamaican Fantazy turned into nightmare, to not step up to the plate and give my 2-cents. First Point: I (personally) have NEVER heard of anyone coming to the States, legally stable (i,e, SSN, Work Permit, etc), and decided to go back home because life in the States was too hard and they couldn't find a job. TRUE: Many Jamaicans back home have very good jobs with financial stability to ensure long-term prosperity for himself andf his own. And also TRUE that a few women (sometimes Men) go to Jamaica, fall in love with the island and a man and is capable of sustaining themselves for a significant period. But it is also EQUALLY TRUE that Many,Many women go to Jamaica, fall in love, decide to stay down there with their Jamaican Loved-one; only to find out later that the loved one does not wish to stay there, but in fact wishes to come to the States, UK or Canada for a better life. The Jamaican man has a pride not normally seen elsewhere, which motivates him to want to BE ALL and DO ALL for his woman. Most of us grew up (in Jamaica) in a society where the man supports the family. In order to fulfill this objective he has to have the financial stability to do this. One that may or may not be achievable in Jamaica. While the "foreign" woman (being more emotionally endowed) may find it romantically satisfying to just live on the island in a little "one-room" with the bare necessities, walking on the beach, hand in hand with the man of her dreams and living off the bare essentials, the Jamaican man wants to know (First and foremost) that there is food on the table and that his woman is "all set". No matter how we dice it, The US (UK and Canada) has a MUCH better quality of life than Jamaica. I ask this question once again: Why do you tink so many of us (Jamaicans) are here living in this Ice-Box? If anyone wishes to move to Jamiaca without making some SERIOUS plans and careful consideration, putting Love first and foremost, I wish you all the best. But I beg of you: put a little "sumptin'" away fi di rainy day. We have a little saying back home: "No Money. No Love". All the best, to the rest. -Alex93 |

Re: having second thoughts
these are the reasons that i will move to JA only after i retire on a sweet ass pension that will afford me to live my retirement days in relaxation and financial freedom. sure i have fallin in like with JA men, in love with the sun, the sea and the numerous 'friends for life' i have made by frequenting the island over the past 6 years....however i know living there now is not possible or practical. i can wait.....30 more years!! LOL
