Re: Going back, giving back, and rebuilding Jamaica.
LOL mi neva mean you Jamaica Miss, but I absolutley hate a tief with a passion, hope that they are safe and learn from this unfortunate episode, sometimes it just tek people a while to get in synch with a place that them not used to and ginals can smell a mark a mile away.
Thats why location is key you know, both my neighbor on the land I have in Ochi and two lots down have steel and blocks on them land for the past couple of years and everytime I go visit the land to bush it, the material still there. This is in Healthy Hill bout 10 - 15 minutes from Dunns River Fall by the way, man I remember when country people could leave door open when I went to visit from Kingston and it shock mi....Time we tek the country back from these type of parasites...Thats why I have to return and contribute.

I wish you best of luck and Jah's Blessings! My husband and I hope, also, to move to JA in 6-7 years to live on this wonderful island. I don't post often but I had to put my 2 cents in and my well wishes. Please keep us posted on your move and melding into the Jamaican culture/environment!
Peace and Love!

See this article.
Read this article too.
The second article gives some figures on the number of reported criminal incidents involving returning residents.
As to whether Jamaica is hopeless, I don't think so. Yes there's crime, but there's crime everywhere. Every country has negative things going on there. The majority of returning residents to Jamaica manage to settle in ok, and make positive contributions.
Coming back home after being away for a long time can be rough. Culture shock hits some people hard. They get used to things running one way outside of Jamaica, and find it challenging when things don't quite work the way they are used to in Jamaica. Heck, after going away for 1 week, I get a bit phased when I get back home and experience Jamrock in all its glory. (Nuttin' bun mi worse dan using real high speed Internet ova foreign, den coming back to dialup or 128K ADSL ova yah so - cross! )
The mistake some returning residents make, is not keeping the link with home, and losing touch with what's going on here. If you keep in the loop, it's easier for you to know what and where the risks are and how things are really running, so that you can better protect yourself and make your transition smoother.
Very few things in life are easy. Plenty of the good things come with challenges. Many people don't let crime or inconvenience deter them from coming home and contributing positively to the island. It can be done. It just takes careful thought and planning.

I agree X, good post but then again I just read what you`re typing and it makes sense! A person who expressed that to me expressed that from their own experience! That is how they feel!
Eventually that person would like to go back home, but this is just what they are seeing in their life so far!
I guess everyone`s experience and reality ... as always ... will be different.

well said, we need more jamaicans who are living abroad to think like that. politics as aid in the caused of the state of crime in jamaica today.one of our biggest problem is failing to establish a strong economy that will draw investers to this country, if we have a strong economy which would draw investers to establish more businesses, more
people would be employed and There will be less idle hands. jamaica is also suffering from a brain drain, most of or brilliant minds as migrated.
It will be great if most of our jamaican friends will come back to invest in jamaica. also we need to restrusture our justice system and our police force,!! in jamaica , too long now!! we have too much on punished criminals!!!

If we can get more Michael Lee Chins to pump some money into worthwhile investments in Jamaica, there's hope.

Re: Going back, giving back, and rebuilding Jamaica.
Update on my friends who built near Lucea. They decided to stay in Ja but have taken many precautions against theft. They can shut off the top floor so that no one can get to them as they sleep, even if they were able to break into the bottom floor. They are gated and fenced in the yaard and the new car has a different club that is guaranteed not to fail. Only problem is, I can't get one because it was pruchased in England. I am going to check around here in Oregon on my temporary visit, though and see what I can come up with.
And good news, they have decided to stay in Jamaica. She says their lifelong dream will not be detered by tiefs.

Good for them!
Living in Jamaica takes some adjustment to the life some people may have lived elsewhere. But once you figure out "di runnings", you can take steps to protect yourself and your investments.

Re: Going back, giving back, and rebuilding Jamaica.
I would say to anyone thinking of going to live there to just go with no fear. I gave up a good job, sold my home, gave away my car and possessions to the horror of everyone I knew. Now Im here I know I made the right decision. All those friends and family who tried to hold me back cant even be bothered to spend a few pound on a phone call. They still live in their capitalist world where what they have is all that matters. Of course its not always easy here. As a white woman I get people begging a lot, expecting me to pay more as they obviously think im rich. Not to mention men trying to sell their souls trying to get a rich woman. Wheres the pride in that? It gets frustrating and I do think the whole population needs educating on what life is really like overseas. Ive tried explaining to people how the tourists they see spending money have mostly borrowed money from banks and credit cards to have a once a year holiday. But what makes me happy and at peace is the beauty and simplicity of the place. The challenge of trying something new and adapting to another culture. And not having to strive every day to achieve in order to get a better car, or home improvements or fill my house with possessions. You cant take nothing when you die so you may as well live doing what makes you happy. All those thinking of coming just come. There will always be people here to help you including me.

Re: Going back, giving back, and rebuilding Jamaica.
I guess my question of curiosity would be.....
How many JA's come to the US to prosper personally and then go back to their homeland to do the same?
Are there success stories of those who have taken what they have learned and earned and put it to good use?
IMHO......It would be a shame to forget all of those you left behind just for the sake of self preservation.

Some come back, some don't. The reality is that for many, they simply cannot sustain the kind of life they want/need/have become accustomed to outside of Jamaica, if they came back to Jamaica. Many Jamaicans abroad give back to Jamaica though, whether through remittances, or other philanthopic or business endeavours.
Many Jamaicans abroad want to come back, but that is not easy or necessarily possible for them.

Re: Going back, giving back, and rebuilding Jamaica.
Interesting thread, I never read this post before. I have many JA friends here who talk of returning home and building houses - some do it, some don't - However, I have a good friend who is a musician. He is building a house near to St. Elizabeth, and has been working on a project to start up a nonprofit music school for the youths - He definitely is someone who has made it big and is trying his best to give back by instilling something that he loves into the future of the country.
