Darfur Now

Many of you know my activist side and many of you are yet to discover my passions...
Please... if you have the time, go see this movie. It's one of the most well done documentaries on the crisis facing the innocent people of Darfur. Most importantly, it leaves one with a sense of hopefulness about the ability of individuals to make a difference.

Finally, the more people who see it, the more that movies of this kind can be made.

Here is a synoposis:
This documentary sheds light on the genocide that is happening in Darfur by profiling six people who are trying everything they can to stop the violence. These brave activists include a Darfurian woman who becomes a rebel, a passionate UCLA graduate, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in the Hague and a U.N. relief worker and of course, Don Cheadle.

Here is a link to the trailer, featuring Don Cheadle. He is one of the executive producers.

Re: Darfur Now

Meesh I really really want to say that I completely respect you for the path you are pursuing. I have to be honest though....watching things like that bring tears to my eyes for the following reasons:

#1 - Its atrocious.

#2 - I'm the type of person who would love to do something, ANYTHING to help but it seem sooooo daunting and too large a task to even know where to begin.

#3 - Most people that watch things like that have complete ability to DO SOMETHING to help, but seem to not want to inconvenience themselves or compromise their lifestyles....which is what it takes to make a difference.

#4 - There's so much strife and crap going on in SO MANY places in the world its hard to choose just ONE.

It's true... and most people feel the same way you do... No feat, regardless of how large or small, is without merit. In the face of major human atrocities, people often feel that if they can't fix the entire problem they can do nothing... this is simply not the case... and it is a convenient excuse for doing nothing. Every little thing that is done, a phone call to a legislator, a letter and email, paying to see a movie, reading a website to educate yourself, is an important step.

I would suggest you do precisely what you said in #4 and pick "just one" thing and take some small step every week.

During the genocide in Rwanda in 1994, the congress didn't receive more than a dozen calls, letters, inquiries from across the US. They have since gone on record saying that if they had believed there was the political will or more specifically, a political "cost" for their inaction, they would have been compelled to intervene.

"All that is necessary for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing." -Edmund Burke

Nope... not connected, except that Rwanda and Uganda are very close to one another and the conflicts within each of these African countries usually "bleed" into neighboring areas.
