philip (jack's father) kidnaps and holds josh (jack's nephew) ransom so marilyn (jack's sister-in-law, and one time fiancee) has to lead jack to a house that is supposed to be gradenko's safe house but is rather an ambush
bomb explodes and milo and marilyn are being pursued by hostiles in the aftermath
the hostiles are actually in employ by philip to capture marilyn so he can get to gradenko firts

reed and tom lennox are meeting in the boiler room where reed introduces lennox into a plan already in play to alleviate the president

morris falls off the wagon and starts drinking again and seems on the verge of a breakdown
chloe suspects and confronts him
milo becomes suspicious also in morris's debriefing of him

marilyn gets the address where philip is holding josh
and gives CTU the address that is really supposedt to gradenko's safe house
jack and marilyn go after philip and josh only to find it was a false lead and philip has josh held on the rooftop of an adjacent building

reed knocks out and ties lennox up when he decides to back out of the plan to eliminate the president

after jack negoiates josh's release he is set on his knees thinking his father was bout to execute him
while standing behind him with gun pointed, philip reveals gradenko's plan to bring russia back into the seat of a superpower while crippling the US and having it blamed on the arabs and his company's role in selling the nuclear weapons gradenko who sells them to fayed

as philip escapes, jack is contacted by a new player in the story
