We Be Burnin... WAS a good chune!

So Sean Paul released dis chune on Bubble Up riddim a while back. Then he re-did it for the popular Stepz riddim (with Capleton's Or Wah, Assassin's Idiot Ting, and Ele's Pakistan and Seh Dem Bad) a few months back. Imediately we started playing it with this riddim and it was a pretty good showing--good weed tunes usually are (just ask Wayne Marshall).

But then... months later, all of a sudden Sean Paul's got a new album coming out and they announce that his Stepz chune will be the first single. Cool.. I think. Then.... I see the video!

In a word... WTF?????? Obviously the record label decided that you can't sing about weed in the USA and be popular so they had to DESTROY the lyrics and make the song a 50-Cent style i'm-chillin-in-the-club-bling-bling-sippin-whatever-brand-of-champagne-is-cool-right-now idiot song. And check out the trucks dressed up like Civics!!!!!!! Bad Sean, just bad.

I mean really! The new lyrics are BEYOND lame... it is so sad.

AND... how dare he change it all and yet still leave the name of King Solomon in the chune. King Solomon has nothing to do with picking up girls in the club... this was a ganja line and everyone knows it. I mean... read it (highlighted in each version) below and see what I mean.

BUN OUT censorship and how Politically Correct bible waving conservatives can SCARE an entertainer into crippling their artistic endeavours!!!!

What da hell??? So sad, but this happens more times than people seem to notice. Conforming to what's supposedley hip and current instead of promoting your own creativity.

You're right to, it does sound like a reggae version of a crappy Fiddy Cent track.........

Re: We Be Burnin... WAS a good chune!

well urban u explained it yourself, first of all thanks for sharing the lyrics with the many of us who don't listen as fast enuff to grasp them  nevertheless due to the political red-tape and how damaging it can be record sales if you are banned. now despite alll we talk about and a persons artistic rights and freedoms, we all work to make money, Sean is no different, he has to adapt, and get creative for the market just to get by. In one interview its best if he does that rAther than have an entire cd bleeped out because of obscenities, or words which could be viewed as offensive.

Re: We Be Burnin... WAS a good chune!

First of all Sean Paul is not the hardest DJ around. He grew up pretty middle class and as recently as 5 years ago would come and do your party for under 1K.

He's got the radio/big money bug.

It's a shame really when you thing about the fact that if it wasn't for Jamaican DJ's, you wouldn't have hip hop at all. Nor would you have remixes or scratching.

If Kool Herc hadn't started toasting in NY, MTV and BET wouldn't exist.

If King Tubby and Lee Perry hadn't starting remixing in the 60's and 70's you wouldn't have sampling and remixing and dub plates.

Anyway...J'cans need to own this music more. Where would hip-hop be without Biggie or Busta or Mr Cheeks or KRS or Pepa (salt & pepa) or all of the other Jamaican artist that made hip hop what it is?

So instead, we let the industry force us to change our lyrics. There wouldn't be much of an industry without that likkle island called Jamaica.

Re: We Be Burnin... WAS a good chune!

it is a shame that artists have to be hindered like that. what's even worse is that 95% of the US population will never even know about the original version of that song. i don't "partake" in what the song is about, but at least it has a purpose. the second one ain't 'bout squat!

Re: We Be Burnin... WAS a good chune!

Well I just saw this video for the first time yesterday and all I have to say is its good IF YOU LIKE THE CIRCUS AND CRAPPY DANCERS!!!

Okay people I've seen and met Sean Pauls dancers in person.....and these girls in the video ARE NOT THEM!!!! Not a one could dance at all in this video! And what's with that girl who have the chronic pout on her face? What a bunch of dummies. Plus those trucks in the video look like a mobile circus...I was expecting to see clowns jump outta them. Whatever!!!

Re: We Be Burnin... WAS a good chune!

Thanks for the lyrics to 'We Be Burnin'! I was really looking for the "real" lyrics and the "messed-up" ones. On the internet, they had the lyrics for the "real" one but then the chorus was the "messed up" version. Anyway, thanks for both... the correct way!

Have a hippy New Year and be safe!
