Smile 5th Annual Reggae Package.....

The 5th Annual Reggae Package in this months issues of The Source magazine; starts on page 120 and, is comprised of two articles about Reggae, and Jamaican culture. I just wanted to recommend this reading to ETJ. This is surprisingly well written, and quite accurate, which I find shocking considering a Hip Hop mag published it! I will say that the Source really lived up the their name on this one. This is the biggest of all the Reggae Packages that they've ever had, no doubt because of this years DANCEHALL/JAMAICA/WEST INDIES craze!

Article #1:

"ROOTS RENAISSANCE" this article written by one Patricia Muschino, is an impressive imformation piece. It describes the events of April 21 1966, when Emporer Haile Selassie I comes to Kingston Jamaica. It describes the impact of his presence on the Jamaican people, and also digs into the "ROOTS" culture a little bit, for a better understanding as well talks about the influence of that on Reggae. It also has INFO on commentary from, artists as well namely, my man BUJU

Article #2:

"BOOGIE ON REGGAE WOMEN" written by one Howard Campbell, this is basically a time piece describing how old DANCEHALL music really is. Then describing the timeline of WOMEN in dancehall and their impact. It features information about and commentary from such artsits as Marcia Griffiths, Tanya Stephens, Lady Saw and many more.

People who haven't copped this issue of the Source magazine SHOULD. If you have read this article please post your opinions here

Re: 5th Annual Reggae Package.....

Hey Bashment Girl-
The only reason I bought this Source issue was to read the reggae features! Paging through it I saw the other W.I./JA article on what songs are hot now. I really liked the feature stories, esp. the one on women in reggae Does Source always showcase W.I. music?

Did you catch the Relix issue about 2 months back with Bob Marley on the cover? It was also a reggae special edition. Very cool articles and list of essential reggae albums (can't remember who compiled the list).

Well being that this is the 5th Annual I guess it been for some time now however I don't know in general though. I don't read source all that much! I own a couple issues... all with PAC or Afeni on the cover lol Yeah I buy the reggae spot light out of hip hop mags. This was the first time I was actually impressed by one!

Well, Relix is another music mag that usually caters to the Grateful Dead scene. You can get it at any book store. I don't usually read it, but when I saw the reggae edition, I bought it fast! A lot of "jam band" music fans also like roots reggae.

Cheers!
