Re: What are tourists expecting when they visit Jamaica?

My first trip was October 2000. My best friend had just gotten divorced and she said she needed to get away for a long weekend -- and me, well, I hadn't been away from my daughters in 6 years. We picked Jamaica because it was affordable. We had NO expectations -- just a few days to ourselves to rest and relax. That trip was life-changing for me and there isn't one thing that made it that way -- it was everything! I'm riveted by everything on the island -- people, food, weather, homes, tourism. You name it! My 5 year plan is to relocate there (once my daughters are grown and move away from home).

Have expectations changed today?

fun in the sun
GREAT scub diving
lively friendly people
great music
great food
rest and relaxation

and I'm not gonna lie... perhaps a flirtation or two... and I do just mean flirtation.

Re: What are tourists expecting when they visit Jamaica?

I booked my flight to go in August and what I expect is some good food, beautiful sights, potential danger (reading the crime section of the KingstonChronicle) and some fun. My very good friend had a honeymoon cruise that stopped in MoBay and they took a tour to Ocho Rios. I did some poking around and decided that this was the country for me to visit this year. Starting in 2006 I vowed that I'll visit one new foreign country a year and since I'm a lover of African, Reggae and Soca music I think I'll enjoy the trip.

Another one of my goals whenever I visit these countries is to take a domestic flight during my visit so thanks to Air Jamaica I'll be flying from Montego Bay to Kingston. I can't wait to fly Air Jamaica and see what it's like to fly like a true Jamaican.

I'll be going by myself and since there were not any vacation packages that had what I wanted to do I'm planning everything myself and am still putting my plan together. I have my flight there booked, Air Jamaica flight booked and three nights in Kingston Pegasus hotel booked so with more research, reading and seeing about what to do on the western part of the country I'll have a great trip planned.

Re: What are tourists expecting when they visit Jamaica?

sounds like a good plan. hope you enjoy Jamaica and its even MORE than you expect. what i found when i first visited was my true home. one thing ive found is that u either love it or hate it. those who love it want to live it, breathe it, sleep it.

Re: What are tourists expecting when they visit Jamaica?

When I go to Jamaica I always feel like the weight of the world has been lifted from my shoulders as soon as I step off the plane. The colors of the sea and sky and vegetation along with the sunshine just really boost my spirit, maybe that's because I live in a place that's gloomy much of the year, I dunno.

When I'm in Jamaica I tune out the rest of my life in the states. I'm totally in the moment, just enjoying the scenery, the people, the music, the sun and water etc. etc. I'm a pretty driven person at home, being in Jamaica lets me relax and feel playful in a way I'm not often able to be in the States. That's why I keep going back. I've visited several Caribbean islands, but for me, Jamaica is my home away from home.

I think I will. I'll be sure to take a lot of pictures and write a trip report here. I have a feeling that I'll miss it when it's time to leave.
