Hotels in MoBay and Negril, what do you like and recommend?

I really hope you guys enjoy my thread because I seem to love making them. This time I would love to get your suggestions on hotels in Montego Bay and Negril. Like I said I'm a cheap ass but don't want to stay at a place that has mosquitos and bugs crawling over me at night.

I read some reviews for Toby's resort in MoBay and it seems like a good deal. I'm looking for a place that is possibly less than US$100/night (J$100 would be nice too) that is within walking distance to the bars, clubs, restaurants and shopping areas. I've been studying the maps of Negril and Montego Bay on Google Maps and walking around these cities doesn't look so bad.

Places online I've read keep mentioning how people never want to leave the super expensive resorts for safety reasons but I say **** that because I'm coming to Jamaica to see Jamaica. Not some American resort inside Jamaica. Hedonism in Negril does seem tempting since every girl there is probably itching to get laid but hopefully it isn't just a couples resort. I'm going by myself so with all that said what do you guys recommend and where have you stayed? I've read the online reviews but I value your opinions even more. Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Hotels in MoBay and Negril, what do you like and recommend?

depends on what you want to spend..

but in Mo Bay, 5 mins from the airport there is a place called Palm View...the manager's name is Dorris Morgan and the room (1) bedroom runs bout 60 dollars per night. it was clean and had stove/kitchen for cooking. It was also pretty secure and very quiet..

i would stay there again

right down a hill, and you are on the strip to the bars and the beach and shops

Did you look at the Negril Map here?: The New Negril Map
It was put together by residents and frequent travelers, and includes the little mom and pop places that aren't usually on the tourist boards.

For hotels in Negril under that price, check out Yellowbird, NBCC, Donaldson's Inn, Hidden Paradise - Jah Bs

Also, in Negril, it is easy to meet people no matter where you stay - lots of happy hour / web casts, etc...

Thumbs up Re: Hotels in MoBay and Negril, what do you like and recommend?

I visited Negril in November 07, March 08, July 08, and am going back at the end of August.

The first three times I stayed at Point Village [all-inclusive] resort and met friends who I keep in touch with. However, if you're traveling alone, it's not in the price range you specified.

Next time, I'm staying at Hidden Paradise, as someone above recommended. A local recommended it to me as a nice, inexpensive place to stay.

As far as not feeling safe, I've always felt safe, and hung out at places other than the resort every visit.

Check out Alfred's (Friday, Sunday, Tuesday) and The Jungle (Thursday) for night entertainment. Be sure to eat at Sweet Spice - I recommend the conch bits. Try to make friends, so you get to experience the real culture, especially on return visits.

Enjoy your trip!

I will be sure to enjoy it. I'll take a look at Hidden Paradise Negril and see what that's all about.

Also thanks for your post Lady Rasta. I would be totally lost in Jamaica without all of your help.

Sadly I won't be in Negril or Montego Bay on a Thursday.

Anyway, I just booked a reservation for the Altamont West in Montego Bay so all I need is to finish researching hotels in Negril and I'm set.

I was using Hotels.com to look for places to stay and Altamont West isn't listed on the bargain hunter websites. I'm glad Jomo's girl pointed it out for me. Not bad for US$90 a night.
