The Sumfest/Mobay/Ritz Carlton/ trip of mishaps - JamCan Stylee! - Jamaica Talk

I look high in every damn picture and I don't even smoke! What the hell's wrong with me???

My flight down on Air JA was just as GHET-TO as Tia described hers! I’m talking 3 inch long nails on all the females, the hair all done up, and one chick was actually only wearing a shiny gold bikini top with her denim batty riders. Okay people, we’re arriving in Mobay at 7AM……we’re not flying directly to the Sumfest venue!!!!!!!! But it was all good for a laugh, although Debbie & I are trying to contain ourselves so we don’t get shanked when we get off the plane. This is how mental we are after the 15 hour ordeal!

Our ride picks us up and takes us to the Half Moon resort where we get out, get a free drink and find out that’s NOT where we’re staying. Then our promoter picks us up there and takes us to the Ritz Carlton where we can’t even afford to breathe the air. But the good part is the bathroom is big enough for a party, and all marble. Because we’d been flying through the night and Air JA has sardine seats, it was hard to sleep so Debbie decided to nap. I was completely wired so I changed and went out to the beach after calling Tia to tell her we arrived. This is the view from our balcony at the Ritz, waking up to this every morning was like heaven. Not to shabby, unfortunately we didn’t take any of the inside of the room.

After DEbbie gets up we head out for some food to the beach restaurant that costs $8US for a freakin blended fruit drink WITHOUT the liquor! Damn Ritz! And they only have 'decent' food, not outstanding. Great jerk pork though, as you can see it in the picture, along with my favorite festival and some rice & peas.

So this is where Tia and Samba show up at our hotel, only she has all the pictures of this little rendezvous for some reason. Tia is supposed to be emailing me some more pics but I have yet to see them!!!! I'll wait patiently.
We all sat around having some drinks and I was getting to know Samba's smartassery real quick, but smoothed out with that sassy voice of his it didn't matter. And it was fun being at the resort so I could act like I had money and told the restaurant to "charge it to the room". That was fun until we checked out.

This is Stephen, our waiter down at the beach bar. He's the one who got me familiar with "Stookie", "Frogback", etc....before the big night at Sumfest.

We all go back to our room....molest Samba to death (

) while I play di dancehall in preparation for Sumfest that night. After we say goodbye to Samba and he drives off, we get in our taxi and head to the Pelican for dinner. I won't go into detail because this is starting to look and sound familiar....LOL. But heres the group shot at the Pelican anyways.....MINUS KC. I can't believe he stood me up twice in a row.

Tia's already told you in her report that we hung at her place for quite a while til her man gets off work and comes over. So this is what I do for entertainment while we sit. I SOOOO wanted to start drinking at this point but I knew we'd be up til 6AM and didn't wanna wear out. So I pose instead, in the xmas lights outside Tia's room.

Off to Sumfest we go! Woohoo! I'm tellin you people this was one of the most amazing experiences of my life....to be surrounded by this many Jamaicans who are as in to the music as I am. All I wanted to do was find a DRINK and a DANCE PARTNER. Mission accomplished withing a half hour. This is the best picture of Sumfest we got, it was so dark. I can't even remember who this is....either Ele (I know he was wearing white) or I don't know.

Oh and this was my dance partner. Hotteach this is for you....His name is Jason, and he's fine as hell, a fabulous dancer, sang all di lyrics to me while we danced, and all the while could NOT believe I'm white. Go figure. He kinda tagged along with us on another night too....I didn't mind. And twenty...yes 20 years old. I have more pics of him but you only need one.

So after Sumfest, and Jason....

Friday...we wake up at a decent hour and decide to go into Mobay for some shopping and food. We went for lunch at "The Native" for some coconut fish....yummy in my tummy. Then we walk through the markets, do a likkle shopping and head to Tia's place again. Once there she calls Marie, her friend and drivah. She comes to pick us up and tek us bakka yaard. The road going up to her place is UNBELIEVABLE! I'm talking 90 degree angle and potholes like you'd find on the moon! LOL. But her home and neighborhood is sweet and quaint. I love seeing local stuff like this....its the real Jamaica. Here's the little store right across from her house in Seaview Heights. All the kids come out from the corners they were hiding in to see the 2 white gyal in their neighborhood. The don't say anything but the grins on thier faces tell it all.

Marie's son Mario up in the tree picking us something. He seemed to love the fact that we were there. I also heard from his mama and older brother that he's the man to go to for learning ANY Jamaican dance. He has it all wrapped up.

Saturday....the day I been waitin on. I get to go back to Negril and see all my boys fram long time! That's really where my heart is.
We get Marie to pick us up from the Ritz for the 1.5 hour drive from Negril. I told Debbie to get her camera ready for the drive through Lucea, one of my favorite towns to drive through. Its so small but just bustling with activity all the time. Here are some shots she took out the car window.
