Mrs. Rosa Parks 1913-2005
She was born Rosa Lousie McCauley on February 4, 1913, in Tuskegee Alabama and she passed this life October 25, 2005 of natural causes.
On the 1st of December 1955, Mrs. Rosa Parks, and African-American seamstress, was arreste in Montgomery, Alabama for not standing and letting a white bus rider take her seat. It was an "established rule" in the American south (at that time) the African-American riders had to sit a the back of the bus. African-American riders were also expected to surrender their seat to a white bus rider if it was needed. When asked to move to let a white bus rider be seated Mrs. Parks refused. She did not argue and she did not move. The Police were called and Mrs. Park's was arrested. Mrs. Parks was not the first African-American to be arrested for this "crime." But was the first to be arrested who wa well known in Montgomery African-American community. She was once the secretary to the president of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). On the morning of December 5, 1955 he Afircan American residents of the city refused to use the buses. Most walked, those few with carsarranged rides for friendsand strangers, some ever rode mules. Only a very small number of African-Americans rode the bus that day. As the boycott continued the white community fought back with terrorism and harassment for picking up hitchikers. African Americans waiting on steet corners fro a ride were arrested for loitering. The boycott continued for over a year. It eventually took the United States Supreme Court to end the boycott. On November 13, 1956 the Court declared Alabama's State and local laws requring segregation on buses was illegal. On December 20th federal injuctionswere served on the city and bus company officials forcing them to follow the Supreme Court's Ruling. The following morning, December 21, 1956, Dr. King and Rev. Glen Smiley, a White Minister, shared the front seat of a public bus. The boycott had lasted 381 days. The boycott was a success. "May you rest in Peace my Blessed Queen! Your journey is over and your job is has been well done here on earth," and I just want to "Thank You"! and other's for making it possible for "All" of us Black people to ride the bus taking a seat on the front of the bus, and also, never having to give up my seat. We as Black people have came along way in our struggles and now we have Black Bus drivers, men and women. Yes, we as Black people have definitely come a long way...... Peace and Blessings Star |
