US keeps eye on Jamaica, but waives sanctions
Observer Reporter
Friday, September 23, 2005

THE United States on Wednesday waived sanctions against Jamaica for people trafficking, saying it had made "significant efforts to comply" with the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, but kept it on a special 'watch list'.

In June of this year, the US State Department named Jamaica among 14 countries which had not done enough to prevent modern-day slave trade in prostitution, child sex workers and forced labourers.

However, President Bush on Wednesday concluded that Jamaica had made enough improvements to avoid sanctions.

And while states such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Ecuador also had their sanctions lifted, despite failing to make significant reforms, Cuba, North Korea and Burma are to face full penalty, barring them from receiving certain types of foreign aid.

Funny because I watched a documentary the other day about human trafficking and Jamaica wasn't even close to on that list. The most infamous places are Turkey, Romania, France and believe it or not the UK. Its sick. Not one single Caribbean island was name in this documentary.
