How so?

He is reported to have been diabetic, recently complained about chest pains and stress; so its quite plausable that the recent loss at the World Cup could have triggered his demise.

The Police reports listed his death as suspicious, not criminal.

Re: Cricket World Cup - Now it's Murder!

To the Jamaicans outside, I know your concerns go to the image of Jamaica. To us here in Jamaica, I can say that the idea of the act being committed by a Jamaican has not even entered our minds. The police always knew that it was murder. They probably also know who the most likely suspects are. It was originally said to be suspicious but was not reported as such. It was only after the last Pakistan game that it was published as suspicious.

The police are dropping some big hints, "someone Wooler knew, …maybe several persons involved, very strong persons, etc". This case has an international twist to it and there is a World Cup in progress. You probably wont hear the final version until April when the World Cup ends. Remember there are cameras in the hallway….

Yep, never thought that the killer was Jamaican..just that this killing took place on Jamaican soil...so just another nail in the coffin of JA's bad news image.

As for arresting the criminals..yeah forgot about the cameras..but I got a feeling Jamaica Police gonna need an extradition order to get the killers back into JA coz me feel dem loooong gone.

Re: Cricket World Cup - Now it's Murder!

It is said that after Pakistan bombed out of the tournament after the loss to Ireland, Pakistanis were calling for the death of the coach and the team. Apparently cricket is like a religion in Pakistan, and the betting and gambling associated with it is massive. Bookmakers there are major power brokers and they don't like losing money.

Re: Cricket World Cup - Now it's Murder!

Well its sad to know that it has now developed into suspicions of murder but I guess thats just the way it is.

As a Jamaican, I dont consider it a tarnish on our image EVEN if the crime was committed by a local.

Though unfortunate, crime is crime and it happens everyday, everywhere.
I doubt very seriously if this will have any impact whatsoever on our image.

I have to diagree with you on this one. Cricket is a big game in West Indies and in England. The dead Coach was English and was well known in the industry. This is news in England and gets daily coverage...and like I say because he died in Jamaica, people will look at that as a further justification that Jamaica is a dangerous place to visit.

Here's the latest link.

Well who is to tell that he wasn't poisoned by members of his own squad after the loss or as the following report indicates, that he could have been involved in some gambling ring. Why would a Jamaican want to kill Woolmer? Only stupid ppl could presume that yes Jamaica is a dangerous place because of this murder. Look at what happened to that girl who went on a school trip to Aruba some years a back up till now her body not found and nobody charged.

That article does reflect poorly on Jamaica. How unfortunate...things like these always do. However, this image is not the one portrayed to those in North America. Most likey, the news was not considered important in the USA as cricket is not exactly "popular" in the states.

Check out the Gleaner...they are saying that the Coach met his untimely demise after being strangled. I have also heard the same regarding the Pakistan fans and their obsession with Cricket. Scary stuff..

I have to say that sentence concerns me.... with respect to the portrayal of Jamaicans in the UK...

It is unfortunate that this man died on Jamaican soil, however that is as much association as we can have with this issue.... the UK press however will make it otherwise.... the implication being perhaps the air breathed in Jamaica must has flipped someones head to make them a murderer and the fact that they were in Jamaica at the time means it must have been a Jamaican!!

If the UK press were to be believed, every single crime of violence is perpertrated by a Jamaican... we really need to do something to stop this racist attitude towards Jamaicans but I'm at a loss as to WHAT or HOW!!

Ever consider a letter to the editor? Joining local Jamaican culture awareness groups? I am betting that there is already some sort of group that is attempting to address concerns of Jamaicans and if not...I am certain that others share your concern. I would be interested to hear what you find.

Re: Cricket World Cup - Now it's Murder!

This incident has kindof put a damper on the tournament. Even the players are distracted somewhat by what has been going on. It is unfortunate.

Also, the former president of the Irish Cricket Union died in Ocho Rios of natural causes.
Quote:
The Irish Cricket Union has confirmed the sudden death of former President and Chairman, Bob Kerr.

Mr Kerr, who was 68, passed suddenly at his hotel in Ocho Rios in Jamaica, where he was supporting Ireland at the World Cup.

Both these incidents are unfortunate.
